1. Introduction An estimated 1.4 million housing units were completed in the United States in 2022 [1]. In the same year, the residential sector consumed 1.3 × 1019 J (12.3 quadrillion Btu) of total energy [2]. These statistics make residential buildings one of the prime candidates for reducing energy consumption in the US. Energy-related requirements for residential buildings are regulated by the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) [3] and the International Residential Code (IRC) [4].
