1 Introduction Climatic aridity refers to a persistent imbalance between water availability and atmospheric water demand (UNCCD 2024). Unlike drought, which represents a temporary deviation from climatic norms, aridity is a structural characteristic of the climate system, typically quantified using indices such as the UNEP Aridity Index (AI), defined as the ratio of mean annual precipitation (P) to reference evapotranspiration (ETo) (UNEP 1992).
