Thank you for your service Ma’am
70 years is a long time to lead! I cannot think of another who could elicit such grief from her people, after such a long rule. The news of the Queen’s death broke as my flight from Zurich was landing at London’s Heathrow airport. A few rows behind me, someone burst into tears, and there was audible sniffling through the plane. I’ve never experienced such a somber deplaning. It felt like each one of us had received news of a death in the family.

Can Europe's new €500 billion target of investments help the sun shine on the economy?
Three-and-a-half years ago, the €315bn European Fund For Strategic Investments – or EFSI was unveiled. The target - to kickstart a flagging investment environment. So is the plan working? Well, the bulk of financing from EFSI until now has gone to projects in Research and Development and to small and medium enterprises - but the investment levels in innovation and infrastructure are still far, far below pre-crisis levels. So the plan has received an upgrade. So what is the new Investment target?
It's not (just) about the money
Juan Monzón founded his start-up with two friends. They had innovative ideas about how to use cutting-edge technology for medical purposes but lacked both the funds and the resources to pursue it. Eventually, the company received €300,000 from the European investment plan to develop a new prototype and double its workforce, but at what cost? Juan had to dedicate 20 percent of his human resources for two months to the application process.
Explaining the jargon: Invest EU vs EFSI
Among those that make or cover policy in Brussels, jargon and acronyms can take over conversations. These usually sound like a foreign language to the rest of us in Europe. So #RealEconomy asked Jyrki Katainen, Vice-President of the European Commission for Jobs, Growth, Investment and Competition to explain what was the difference between the much-publicised European Fund For Strategic Investments or EFSI and it’s new pet project, #InvestEU.

It is still based on the principle that every one European Fund Euro, can be leveraged to 15 euros of investments.
Europe’s Ticking Time Bomb: Wage Inequality
Did you know that inequality is rising? This is because the top 20% of Europeans earn five times more than the bottom 20%? We know inequality is the result of faster income growth at the top and slower than average growth at the bottom, and it's been this slow growth of wages at the bottom that’s been the main issue facing Europe since the financial crisis. While the impact has been felt the most in countries like Romania and Portugal, it's also been felt in Italy, and even in Germany.
Workers' rights transformed: Ensuring social protection
As our social security systems were geared for a time when most of us worked full-time for the same employer for years, it may be time for our social protections to evolve as much as our work life has! To better understand the lay of the European landscape, here is our crash course Social Protection - or the lack of it! Of the four out of 10 Europeans in temporary work or self-employed, those in their twenties are mainly in temporary or 'no contract' jobs and their number is also double that...
Europe's housing prices continue to soar
Did you know that house prices across Europe rose by 4.5% at the end of last year? Yet our disposable incomes — the money we have in our wallets to actually spend — hasn’t increased anywhere near that level. Why are Denmark's apprenticeships so effective?
It's estimated between 60-70% get jobs immediately after their apprenticeships, because they have the crucial technical skills employers need. But with youth unemployment across Europe so high, it's become very important these apprenticeships are effective in preparing students for the workplace.By combining education and work, Antony is preparing for a changing workplace.
