USC Students react to Reggie getting his Heisman back
The 2005 Heisman Trophy was placed back into the hands of Reggie Bush Wednesday morning. The last time Bush was in possession of his Heisman was 2010, when he had to give it up because of significant sanctions against USC. The sanctions against USC included Bush receiving improper compensation during his time at USC from 2003 to 2005.
Grateful for the Trojan network: Students and faculty give thanks to alumni and donors
Alumni donate millions of dollars to USC every year, but students rarely see or hear from those alumni. GratefulSC changes that. The Trojan network is something students hear about all throughout their time at USC. They hear how many trojans there are out there and how philanthropic they are for the school, but students may never physically see or meet them.
New members are coming
In the spring semester at USC, some Black students start to go missing. You won’t see them at social gatherings or walking around campus like any other day. Usually, this means one thing in the Black community: these “missing students” are joining a Divine Nine fraternity or sorority. They keep their dealings a secret so that later in the Spring semester, there’s a big reveal of who they are to the rest of the student body.
Breaking Barriers: Franita Tolson appointed as USC Gould School of Law’s first African American dean
USC announced Wednesday the historic appointment of Franita Tolson as the new dean of the USC Gould School of Law, effective April 1. Tolson is the first Black person and second woman to hold the position in the school’s 123-year history. President Carol Folt expressed excitement over Tolson’s appointment in a letter from the provost that went out Wednesday. The letter said Tolson would be elevated from her position as interim dean, which she has held since July 1, 2023.
Students question their soon-to-be $95,000-a-year education
USC plans to increase tuition by another five percent for the 2024-2025 school year, and students are less than jovial about it. The total cost of attendance will increase to $95,225, with the $69,904 tuition price tag making up the biggest chunk of that total cost. “Some people don’t even see $95,000 to $100,000 in a full year of working a full-time job,” said Justin Childress, a senior majoring in business administration.
The fate of your stolen scooter
The DPS Chief of Public Safety, Lauretta Hill, discussed the increase in scooter thefts around campus, and how students can avoid becoming victims. “Scooter theft is the biggest crime because it impacts our students a lot,” said Hill. “We want to continue to educate people on scooter thieves, and if we can get those numbers down it’s not just helpful for us but also to the LAPD.” In 2022, there was a 481% increase in the theft of scooters, which are classified as motor vehicles due to state law.

Microsoft’s VP of Communication Strategies talks AI at Annenberg
USC Annenberg hosted a sit-down with Microsoft’s vice president of communications strategies, Steve Clayton, about the age of AI and its impact. Clayton discussed the evolution of AI since its inception, and how Microsoft plans to get involved with the creation of their Microsoft Copilot. Copilot is a chatbot software that can do a range of things on request.
Good JuJu is spreading across the country
With nine games of 30 or more points as a true freshman, JuJu Watkins has broken a USC record set by Cherie Nelson back in the 1988-89 season. Watkins scored a career-high 51 points against No. 4 Stanford on their home court. She followed this career night by dropping 29 against unranked Cal. The next game against Arizona, Watkins dropped 32 points. These are three games out of the many in which Watkins showed her scoring ability.
Grammys viewership is up - but also down?
USC students have a love-hate relationship with the Grammy Awards. Students say they love the music, but feel that the Recording Academy doesn’t always get it right. This year’s Grammys brought in more than 17 million viewers, ranking 5th lowest in viewership of the program ever, a statistic all the more surprising when you account for the fact that this year’s grammys had a near 5 million viewer increase from the previous year.
Meet the Candidates: Sam and Christian
For Sam Stack and Christian Shaw’s USG ticket, finding a balance between increasing accessibility and honing in on that ‘Trojan Pride’ is the best approach. While both Stack and Shaw have been involved with USG since stepping foot on campus, they believe personal experiences speak to what needs to change on campus. Shaw spent his first year at USC on electronic benefit transfer (EBT), receiving food stamps.
Is breaking news breaking down? Original
The journalism industry seems to be on the decline, and it is news to no one. This week the Los Angeles Times laid off 20 percent of its newsroom, and questions about the lifespan of longstanding publications like the Times and how the type and quality of their reporting will change are at the forefront of students’ minds at Annenberg, USC’s school of journalism.
Rent in L.A. to increase in 2024
Rent will likely increase for most Los Angeles city residents. For the first time since March 2020, landlords who own properties under the Los Angeles rent stabilization ordinance will be able to raise rent next year by up to 4%. This ordinance affects about 3/4s of all multifamily rentals in the city. The LA city council signed off on this compromise deal due to COVID era rent freezes expiring in January.
Mike Johnson’s first week as speaker
Mike Johnson: Let the enemies of freedom around the world hear us loud and clear, the people’s house is back in business. The US government will shut down on November 17th, unless the house passes a spending bill for future government funding. This requires bipartisan support since democrats control the senate 51/49. Johnson would also need support from his colleagues, senate minority leader Mitch McConnell.
