Why You Should Date Online and Treat It Like a Job

Why You Should Date Online and Treat It Like a Job

Huffington Post — In the past, when seeking someone to date (and perhaps eventually marry), you had four options. You could just wait, hoping that your daily activities will serendipitously introduce you to someone. This approach appears to be effective only in that it is the one method that everyone utilizes. In this sense, it is always "on." Casting your romantic fate to the wind typically only yields results when significant social gatherings, such as conferences and weddings, lie in your near future. You could beg your friends and acquaintances to introduce you to someone.

An Executive's Guide to Reddit

An Executive's Guide to Reddit

Huffington Post — Presenting itself as "The Front Page of the Internet," Reddit is technically the largest social news website. Unfortunately, this designation misses the core significance of Reddit. Reddit is the central point of interaction between the unique culture of the online community and that of the offline world. This is a crucial designation, as the online community is largely resistant to outside influences, anti-corporation (despite being pro-capitalist), and difficult for the uninitiated to navigate/tolerate. Reddit is more lenient on these fronts than other bastions of internet culture (such as 4chan) and thus is often derided by these communities.

Fallout Equestria: A Fan Fiction with its Own Fandom

Fallout Equestria: A Fan Fiction with its Own Fandom

medium.com — Of all the TV shows, movies, and books I have enjoyed, one of the most engrossing fictional universes and passionate fandoms I have encountered comes in the form of a fan fiction- not just any fanfiction, but one combining the universes of My Little Pony, Friendship is Magic with the Fallout video game series known as Fallout Equestria. I am not the only one who is enamored by this epic work of fan fiction. Hundreds of fan fictions have written about Fallout Equestria, along with thousands of pieces of fan art, a few dozen songs, and about a dozen fan-made Fallout Equestria video games are in the works.

The Abridged Series: An Emergence of a New Genre

The Abridged Series: An Emergence of a New Genre

Huffington Post — The emerge of online culture has fostered the resurgence of a number of out-of-favor artistic genres such as the fan fiction, but has also given rise to entirely new forms of art. One such example is of the Abridged Series. In an abridged series, an individual or team dubs over a show (almost always an animated show) and re-splices clips from it to create a funny new story. This new story often pokes fun at events that took place in the original episode, but can also revolve around cliches associated with the original show's genre or random, one-off themes.

Finished Your Favorite Book/Show? Try Fan Fiction

Finished Your Favorite Book/Show? Try Fan Fiction

Huffington Post — Nobody enjoys the sinking feeling that accompanies the end of an amazing book series or the final episode of a fantastic TV show's season. Where can you turn with your now finely-tuned addiction? With the internet, you never have to worry about a great book/Movie/TV show ending. Welcome to the world of fan fiction. A fan fiction is a recreationally-written story inspired by a nonfiction work or real-world celebrity.

How I Proposed to My Girlfriend on Reddit

How I Proposed to My Girlfriend on Reddit

Huffington Post — Yesterday I proposed to my girlfriend of a year and a half. I didn't take her out to a nice restaurant, on a romantic walk along a beach, or pop the question during halftime at a major sporting event. I proposed to her online, as SirTechnocracy on Reddit.. I did so through 21 commissioned pieces from 18 artists around the world each representing different artistic styles or fandoms that play an important role in our relationship, which, to a great extent, grew around nerd and online communities. These commissions were placed through the popular online art community DeviantART.

The Ideology of Anonymity and Pseudonymity

The Ideology of Anonymity and Pseudonymity

Huffington Post — After decades of cross-pollination between different online communities, a pan-internet culture has developed and refined a common system of values. One of the most ubiquitous and unique features of these systems (when compared to widespread contemporary ideologies) is a deep respect for anonymity and pseudonymity, specifically the dissociation from one's online identity and their offline identity. The Development of the Belief that Anonymity is a Human Right Anonymity was not intentionally built into the internet. The current TCP/IP protocol of the internet, which allowed for a distributive system of diverse computer networks, was developed to be fast and flexible.

Why Stereotypes May Be Helpful to Online Culture

Why Stereotypes May Be Helpful to Online Culture

Huffington Post — I recently proposed to my girlfriend (now fiancée) over the Internet using memes and commissioned artwork. The proposal, which played out over Reddit (a wellspring of online news and discussion), garnered passionate and polarized responses from individuals and media outlets. While some were swept away by the romantic gesture, others saw it to be horrifying. Ubiquitous amongst negative responses was the imposition of a set of stereotypes that have developed around heavy Internet users. At the forefront, they can be seen the stereotype of the "neckbeard," an individual who is overweight, has no friends, lives in his mom's basement, never leaves his house, is a virgin, and lacks both basic hygiene and social skills.
