Abstract In most plants, leaf surfaces exhibit water-repellent properties, which protect against pathogens and weather. Plants such as lotus and rice have evolved outstanding water-repellent properties, so-called superhydrophobicity. However, the structural and genetic basis of these properties in crop plants remains unclear.

Introduction Meiosis is a special type of cell division that produces haploid cells through two rounds of chromosome segregation without intervening DNA replication. Before meiosis, cells that have decided to enter the meiotic process are irreversibly committed to the completion of meiosis (Bhola et al., 2018). After commitment, cells undergo meiosis-specific DNA replication, called premeiotic S phase.
