1 INTRODUCTION Recent IPCC reports clearly state the urgent need to drastically reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and limit global warming to 1.5°C.1, 2 However, global energy demand is predicted to grow significantly, due largely to a rise in global population and the increasing demands of developing regions for transportation and goods haulage.3 These sectors are heavily reliant on crude oil, raising environmental concerns which must be addressed rapidly.
