Leaf venation is a classic example of a biological distribution network. Topologies fall into two broad classes: dichotomously branching trees (figure 1a ) and loopy networks (figure 1b ). Among living plants, examples of branching networks are found in ferns as well as the seed plant Ginkgo, while loopy networks are typical of flowering plants and some ferns [6–8].
