In today’s anarchic international order, rules are often broken, and no single superpower can truly guarantee peace and stability. Evidence shows that once countries fall into war, recovery becomes extremely difficult. Recent conflicts demonstrate that war, once started, tends to last for many years and brings long-term suffering. Against this background, Cambodia’s effort to exhaust all peaceful means and seek ceasefire solutions reflects wise leadership rather than weakness.

Abstract Small states, especially developed and democratic states in Europe, have been important players in international security and diplomacy. From joining NATO military operations, gaining a seat in the UN Security Council, to providing economic aid for poorer countries, small democratic states have demonstrated the inclination to acquire status and elevate their influence in international politics.

In a world where old alliances are crumbling and new power struggles emerge, Cambodia has a unique opportunity to chart its own course. Instead of being caught in the crossfire of superpower rivalries, Cambodia can forge stronger, more beneficial partnerships with middle powers like Australia, South Korea, and Japan, securing its own prosperity and stability. History has shown that Cambodia’s entanglement with great powers often comes at a steep price.
