Seeing the Art in Everything
AR/T HOUSE is a culmination of an endless curiosity that led to my deep appreciation for all the backstories in the world around us. Real-time stories about places, people, objects, artwork, architecture, brands, products… all the things in the physical world require a new canvas for storytelling. That is the promise of augmented reality (AR): to unlock otherwise invisible digital layers in our surroundings, to give it more meaning, context, and personal connection.

Wynwood: The Creative Capital for Art Week 2023

More egg-citement!
With eggs now costing so much, a smart household will squeeze the maximum enjoyment out of each egg. In a recent article I described boiling, sunny-side up, and lazy-person scrambled. Now here are some fancier, but still easy, egg dishes. Slow-Cooked Scrambled. Overcooking an egg, by whatever method, is guaranteed to destroy all its flavor. Most people have never tasted correctly cooked scrambled eggs. Try my method.
Crypto resurrection
In two previous articles published in The Philippine STAR in 2018 (“Bitcoins: The emperor has no clothes” and “Bitcoins and blockchains: Murphy’s Law”), I attempted to warn readers of the lack of logic behind cryptocurrencies. This year, 2022, my view was echoed by Warren Buffett and Paul Krugman. One point made in my 2018 articles was: “Instead of handling crypto-money directly, you might work through an exchange (like a stockbroker or bank, but almost surely less trustworthy). .

Probably not. Have you ever watched Glee? Also a probable no. Have you ever wondered what Glee characters certain Columbia a cappella groups would be? A most definite never.
Genetics in a More Equitable Light: A Discussion on Advocacy and Allyship in ELSI – Bwog
On Friday, Staff Writer Manny Gonzalez attended the monthly ELSI Friday Forum seminar, featuring a discussion about the value, importance, upsides, and downsides of advocacy and allyship in ELSI. At the ELSI Friday Forum seminar, on the second Friday of every month, ELSIhub invites ELSI professionals to speak on many different topics under the ELSI umbrella. But, what exactly is ELSI (especially since I’m going to use this acronym millions of times)?
A light-hearted rant against CNN
A light-hearted rant against CNN This is a light-hearted rant against CNN. But not for the reasons you’d expect. With ABS-CBN shut down, there are fewer voices of reason and sober tele-journalism about the Philippines and world events. Those that remain should be heard. I find much to like in CNN reporting. Fareed Zakariah, Don Lemon, Chris Cuomo, Nick Robertson, Halah Gorani, Brianna Keilar, Anderson Cooper. Sanjay Gupta. In terms of both content and delivery, all are worth listening to.
Each of us can choose our own fate during the pandemic (3 ways to fight back against Covid-19)
I AM not a doctor or a public official. (Editor’s note: Gonzalez is chief executive officer of Plantation Bay Resort and Spa). But I have a different qualification: Common sense, and a willingness to learn from the experience of others. Right now, I am locked down in Barcelona, Spain with plenty of time to study and distill what different countries around the world are saying and doing amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The bad news: This virus spreads more easily than ordinary flu.
No time to waste: A pandemic financial recovery plan we need to implement today
MANILA, Philippines — Most countries hit by the coronavirus are now agonizing over what they can do to prevent their economies from sliding into a deep and long recession. There is almost total disagreement from one country to the next. In the Philippines the debate is just beginning, but we do not have time for debate. We should instead make some quick decisions. Better to implement an imperfect strategy immediately while the patient, so to speak, is still alive, than a perfect plan after he dies.
Time to demand better visa treatment for Filipinos
Whether you agree or not with the underlying reasons or the threatened form of reprisal, the President should be applauded for calling attention to other countries’ use of visas as instruments of foreign policy – or worse, simply as means of showing contempt for us as a nation. The President, however, should not limit his interventions to situations involving his close personal circle. The President should stand up for ALL Filipinos.
The arithmetic behind and beyond the proposed Manila Subway
(Conclusion) Whatever it costs, the financial and economic rate of return on the Manila Subway will be negative. This is not unique to the Manila Subway or a reflection on its proponents. Subways just don’t make money; they are a prestige expenditure, a Ralph Lauren polo instead of an Amazon Basic. They are justifiable, perhaps, for richer countries. Poorer countries which embark on subway systems are asking for trouble. We already mentioned Chile.
Bitcoin - the emperor has no clothes
MANILA, Philippines — Thinking of plunging into Bitcoins? Read this first. Dazzled by the technology, some claim Bitcoins are a new kind of money. No, they aren’t, and I’ll explain why. Unlike some parties who should know better, I was not asleep during my Money & Banking classes. Money is a measure of value, a medium of exchange, and a store of wealth: “My land is worth $5,000; give me cash and it’s yours; I will save the money for my retirement.” Money has one non-negotiable requirement: scarcity.
Agile and Scrum Are Far Bigger than IT
Thermo Fisher Scientific, the world’s largest maker of laboratory equipment, recently implemented the Agile framework called Scrum for a new and challenging development project. The company found that it improved collaboration, helped motivate team members by letting them see the big picture, and — perhaps most important to the bottom line — kept them on schedule. As the world of business moves ever more quickly, any number of established companies are taking on new ways of working.
Eating my way through London
MANILA, Philippines - London is a very expensive city to eat in. Or breathe in. Even a mediocre Chinese restaurant will set you back £20. So if you want to save your money for Oxford Street, you’ll have to exercise some restraint. Tip #1. Find the nearest Sainsbury’s. This is the leading supermarket group. But first a word of warning: Do not be tempted by what looks like fresh-cooked food like meat pies and stews. If you buy any of these you’ll be sorry.
How to Pick the Best Lens For Aviation Photography - NYCAviation
(This week for Throwback Thursday, we take a look at aviation photographer extraordinaire Manny Gonzalez’s thoughts on how to pick the best lenses for your plane spotting kit. Originally published in 2011, most of these philosophies still hold true, even if some of the gear has since been updated.) Aviation has many aspects that its enthusiasts enjoy. One of the strongest is aviation photography.

How to Choose a Camera: Sensors and Megapixels - NYCAviation
Ever since digital cameras began using the term megapixel, the meaning of the phrase “bigger is better” has taken on a whole new meaning. Practically every new camera release from almost every known manufacturer comes with a brand new sensor typically with more megapixels. That sensor represents the function that was provided by film in the past. To make the discussion simpler, I will only talk about digital SLR cameras and sensors.
Mastering Photoshop: Curve Balls and a Level Playing Field
More and more, the World Wide Web is the final resting place for most of our images today. With the decline of film in favor of digital cameras, more and more people today are using The Web for displaying their work. This has led to an explosion in the so called “digital darkroom,” where images are captured and processed electronically instead of chemically. Of the many program choices available to the photographer, arguably the most well-known of these tools is Adobe Photoshop.
