Introduction Neurovascular coupling (NVC) is a well-established phenomenon in the brain that involves a tight coupling between neuronal activity and increased cerebral blood flow (CBF) (Iadecola, 2017; Urban et al., 2017). This activity-dependent increase in CBF (also known as functional hyperaemia) occurs rapidly (<2 s) and in a spatially restricted manner (Li et al., 2009; Silva et al., 2000), ensuring the optimal delivery of glucose and oxygen to brain areas with increased metabolic demand.
