Norepinephrine changes behavioral state through astroglial purinergic signaling
Editor’s summary Astrocytes have been shown to modulate neuronal activity, and dysfunction in neuron-astrocyte communication causes alterations in many cognitive processes. However, the fundamental mechanisms by which astrocytes might be integrated into neuronal circuitry has remained largely unclear. Three independent studies investigated the mechanisms and molecular players involved in astrocyte-neuron communication using multiple in vivo and in vitro models (see the Perspective by Eroglu).
Ketamine induces plasticity in a norepinephrine-astroglial circuit to promote behavioral perseverance
Keywords astrocytes ketamine norepinephrine noradrenaline zebrafish circuits glia behavioral states brain states mood-altering compounds Introduction The behavior of animals incorporates past experience to adapt to changing environments.1,2,3,4,5 Importantly, transient perturbations of circuits, such as through emotionally salient events or brief exposure to psychoactive chemicals, can profoundly alter circuit dynamics and behavior far outlasting the input’s lifetime.
Norepinephrine changes behavioral state via astroglial purinergic signaling
Abstract Both neurons and glia communicate via diffusible neuromodulatory substances, but the substrates of computation in such neuromodulatory networks are unclear. During behavioral transitions in the larval zebrafish, the neuromodulator norepinephrine drives fast excitation and delayed inhibition of behavior and circuit activity. We find that the inhibitory arm of this feedforward motif is implemented by astroglial purinergic signaling.
Ketamine modulates a norepinephrine-astroglial circuit to persistently suppress futility-induced passivity
Abstract Mood-altering compounds hold promise for the treatment of many psychiatric disorders, such as depression, but connecting their molecular, circuit, and behavioral effects has been challenging. Here we find that, analogous to effects in rodent learned helplessness models, ketamine pre-exposure persistently suppresses futility-induced passivity in larval zebrafish.

Observation of topological action potentials in engineered tissues - Nature Physics
Abstract The interface between two tissues can have very different bioelectrical properties compared to either tissue on its own. Here we show that an interface between non-excitable tissues can be electrically excitable because of an interaction between the currents passing through the gap junctions—electrically resistive intercellular connections—and the non-linear current–voltage dependence in the ion channels on either side of the interface.
