A foundation model to predict and capture human cognition - Nature
Abstract Establishing a unified theory of cognition has been an important goal in psychology1,2. A first step towards such a theory is to create a computational model that can predict human behaviour in a wide range of settings. Here we introduce Centaur, a computational model that can predict and simulate human behaviour in any experiment expressible in natural language. We derived Centaur by fine-tuning a state-of-the-art language model on a large-scale dataset called Psych-101.
HCA
The Helmholtz Institute for Human-Centered AI (HCA) is an interdisciplinary research group composed of cognitive scientists, neuroscientists, and computer scientists. Together, we develop computational models of intelligence and investigate the foundations of human and machine cognition. Our work bridges disciplinary boundaries: We study human intelligence by engaging people in rich, interactive environments and analyzing their behavior using machine learning.

ECOLOGY Scandinavian wolverine (Gulo gulo). Image credit: Jon Martin Arnemo (University of Inner Norway, Evenstad, Norway). Recolonization of Scandinavian Peninsula by wolverines Some historically persecuted large carnivore species in Europe and North America are now recovering and expanding into formerly occupied ranges. The spatial and temporal dynamics of wildlife populations recolonizing human-altered landscapes are not well-understood. Ehsan Moqanaki et al.

How towns can adapt to fire as bigger burns loom
One glimpse at the devastation in the Los Angeles area, and it’s hard to imagine a complete rebuild. But look at the town of Paradise in northern California today, and you’d never know that the deadliest wildfire in the state’s history leveled Paradise a few short years ago. On November 8, 2018, a downed power line sparked the Camp Fire.

New evidence for early Indian Ocean trade routes into the South African interior
New evidence for early Indian Ocean trade routes into the South African interior Edited by James O’Connell, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT; received October 4, 2024; accepted December 13, 2024 Abstract The rise and spread of ancient Indian Ocean Rim (IOR) trade networks profoundly impacted southern Africa. Control over this trade played a critical role in the rise and maintenance of complex societies of the second millennium CE such as Mapungubwe and Great Zimbabwe.
No gender differences in attraction to young partners: A study of 4,500 blind dates
No gender differences in attraction to young partners: A study of 4,500 blind dates Edited by Timothy Wilson, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA; received August 20, 2024; accepted December 10, 2024 Significance This study examined whether people were attracted to older or younger partners. The sample was a set of N = 6,262 middle-aged adults who signed up for a matchmaking service in the hopes of finding a long-term partner.
Using cognitive psychology to understand GPT-like models needs to extend beyond human biases | Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
Binz and Schulz’s (1) evaluation of Large Language Models (LLMs) via cognitive tasks propelled the adoption of psychological frameworks for testing LLMs’ knowledge. Binz and Schulz found that GPT3 (generative pretrained transformer-3) often responded to cognitive tasks analogously to humans, showcasing human-like biases.

Coherent multidimensional spectroscopy of dilute gas-phase nanosystems
2DES of isolated nanosystems in the gas phase To demonstrate the various aspects of our method, Rb2 and Rb3 molecules are prepared in their high-spin electronic ground states directly on the surface of the helium droplets (Fig. 1a, details in Materials section). To this end, helium nanodroplets are formed in a supersonic jet expansion and doped with individual Rb atoms in a pick-up process.
