No single rule explains how climate affects carbon storage in tropical forests

NEWS AND VIEWS 12 August 2026 Ecologists have long wondered why some tropical forests store more carbon than others. A global satellite survey offers an explanation. Tropical forests are some of Earth’s largest carbon reservoirs, yet they differ enormously in how much biomass they produce, and therefore in how much carbon they store1.

12 hours ago Europe is the fastest-warming continent in the world and in some places is ill-equipped to deal with hot weather. More than 135 million people across Europe, mostly in France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, face temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius (95 Fahrenheit) as the continent’s latest …

Abstract (Sub)tropical inland waters are important greenhouse gas (GHG) sources, yet limited observations have long hindered broad analyses of GHG variability across this diverse region. Here, through a meta-analysis, we have examined the rates and drivers of GHG emissions from flowing and standing (sub)tropical inland waters. We find considerable spatial variation in fluxes, largely related to differences in hydroclimate, geomorphology, land cover and human disturbance.
