New education laws on Kehoe’s desk

Missouri lawmakers filed hundreds of bills related to education for the 2026 legislative session. But when the session wrapped up in mid-May, only a few had made it through both the House and Senate and landed on the governor's desk. In addition to the required education budget bills, a Beacon review found only four education bills that were approved by both houses. Of those, three had not yet been signed into law by Gov. Mike Kehoe at publication time.

School choice gains ground nationwide despite resistance in some states

State lawmakers continued advancing school choice in 2026, with states such as Texas, Tennessee and Missouri launching or expanding their programs. EdChoice, a leading school choice advocacy organization, compiled a roundup of major state actions affecting education freedom. At least three states added funding to existing programs. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey more than doubled the state’s school choice budget to $250 million, enough to accommodate the record 50,000 students who applied.
