What was your first job as a journalist?
I wrote briefs for my college newspaper. Then I went straight into the cops, courts and government beat at my hometown newspaper.
How is social media changing news?
Social media isn't news. But people think it is, and that's making society dumber and more vulnerable.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
My social skills, digital SLR camera, iPhone camera and recorder, reporter notebooks, Sharpie 1 mm rollerball gel ink pens, Word for Windows,
What's your favorite social network?
At present, I'm very fond of Facebook's Reels.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
My husband and I worked together at The Journal Review in Crawfordsville to reveal the identify of last flag raiser on Iwo Jima.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Good journalists write well and take outstanding photographs. Both are forms of storytelling. You need to do both.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
In front of my long-arm quilt machine or behind my digital SLR camera.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
I cover all the beats at my small paper. Some people thinks writing hard news means I can't write the human stuff. They're wrong.
