Conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) are a unique class of polymers containing a π-conjugated backbone and pendant ionic functionalities, which make them soluble in water and polar solvents. (1,2) CPEs combine the optical and charge transport properties of organic semiconductors with the possibility of modulating their physico-chemical properties by controlling electrostatic interactions.
