Interpersonal Problems and Their Impact on Alliance Ruptures in Psychotherapy
Summary Alliance ruptures are common in psychotherapy. Interpersonal problems may increase the likelihood of alliance ruptures, making them valuable areas for therapists to monitor. This study found that hostile submissive tendencies predicted higher frequencies of withdrawal ruptures, while friendly submissive tendencies were associated with fewer withdrawal ruptures. Confrontation ruptures were less frequent and less systematically related to patient-reported interpersonal dysfunction.
