INTRODUCTION The mismatch repair (MMR) system is a system for recognizing and repairing mutations arising during DNA replication. The major genes of the system comprise MLH1, PMS2, MSH2, and MSH6. Defects in the MMR system (dMMR) result in accumulations of mutations over the entire genome, but DNA with short tandem repetitions (microsatellites) are especially vulnerable. This leads to microsatellite instability (MSI), which therefore can serve as a biomarker of dMMR [1].
