Long Live the Short Kings by Marilyn Barr
With the rise of monster romance, the trope of accommodating size differences has taken center stage. Male monsters carry their human female mates for hundreds of pages without tiring, thanks to their “biceps as large as my waist.” While the instant transportation is a bonus, I’ve experienced many of the downfalls of such a tall partner—not because I dated monsters but because I’m barely 4’10” tall. According to car seat manufacturers, I should sit in the back in a booster seat.
Dushevnayasvyaz, Fated Mates, & Other Life Sentences by Marilyn Barr
Valentine’s Day never fails to bring advertisements for diamonds, fancy candies, and over-priced flowers all in the name of love. Every year my soulmate gripes that he wishes romance were cheaper. Why not simply deliver the head of a nemesis or clamp onto a shoulder for a mating bite? Now every kiss begins with “cha-ching” and ends with “sign here, sir.” Even though we are forever Valentines, my spouse and I disappear into our books for the first half of February to avoid the commercial hubbub.
What is a Chuchunya? By Marilyn Barr
When I decided to jump from vampire romance to monster romance, I wanted to start with a cryptid hero. I love reading Kraken, Headless Horseman, and Naga monster romances, but I wasn’t ready to stray too far from the humanoid body-shape…especially since I wanted to raise my spice level to match those popular monster romances on Kindle Unlimited. And don’t get me started on the spider romances.
Geezer on the Clock App by Marilyn Barr
I didn't think I was old...until I joined "the clock app." I’ve learned a lot in my 40+ years on this planet and much of it applies to my adventures on TikTok. Many of my friends thought I lost my marbles when I joined TikTok, claiming our kids are more likely to be on the app than my ideal readers. There is a small corner of the clock app where book lovers congregate and where even the geekiest author can find stardom. Booktok is full of women who love to read.
Doomed to be Monster Fudgers by Marilyn Barr
Like it, love it, hate it, or struggle to understand it…but monster romance and monster erotica are taking BookTok by storm. Hashtags like #monsterlovers, #monsterfudgers, and #monsterromance have millions to billions of videos made by authors, readers, and fanatics. This new subgenre of fantasy and paranormal romance is led by the Queen of Alien Romance, Ruby Dixon.
Monsters of the 1718 Caribbean Sea
I love writing paranormal romance. There is something about showing a reader the redeeming qualities of a monster and demonstrating how everyone deserves to be loved. I’m also a homeschool mom with my own little classroom of monsters (some days). In teaching them about the 1700s and the origins of democracy, I found a new love: the pirate code. I wanted to share the connections between the pirate code and democracy in the world today.
Goodbye to the Wylder West by Marilyn Barr
Saying goodbye to a series is bittersweet. This year the CEO of The Wild Rose Press announced the end of The Wylder West romance book series. I’ve loved writing in 1879 Wylder, WY and enjoyed the camaraderie with the other Wylder authors. Frankly, I could have written about my sexy, leather tanners for a dozen more books. It is my pleasure that I introduce you to my last Wylder West books and the Wylder sisters, Ava and Abigail.
Accosted By Characters by Marilyn Barr
Sometimes a character jumps out at you. When I met Susie of Smoother Than Spumoni, she actually jumped out of the ocean at my family. Susie the Dolphin Shifter is inspired by the rambunctious dolphin of the same name who lives between Anna Maria Island and the mainland of Florida, USA. This dolphin’s favorite activities include knocking over rafts, smashing into the dolphin-watching tour boats, and splashing diners at the local oyster bar on the pier. Susie’s antics aren’t malicious.
The Gold Is Inside You - Promise! By Marilyn Barr
When I say “dowsing,” what image comes to mind? Is it an older cowboy holding two bent sticks while wandering the prairie? Is he looking for gold, water, or an ancient artifact? If so, you are not alone. Dowsing was in its heyday in the late 1880s but is making a comeback. However, dowsers aren’t searching for treasures under the ground, they are using the technique to read their intuition. Some dowsers still use the rods (made of hazel, willow, or metal) but the pendulum has passed it in popularity.
Happy Book Birthday to Strawberry KY! by Marilyn Barr
Two years ago, on the Strawberry Full Moon, the Strawberry Shifters released its first installment - Bear with Me. Alison & Grant's relocation to Strawberry, KY is where it all began. They discover Alison's magical talents aren't the strangest paranormal happenings in the creepy small town. We've watched Bergan Pharma's IT department find love, come out to rural America, & create the unconventional family perfect for them in Book 2: Round of Applause.
My Night of Hoodoo by Marilyn Barr
All authors research for our novels, but sometimes our research takes us down mysterious paths… Or is it just me? Let me tell you about my night with a Hoodoo Priestess... Tomorrow, I release the final installment of the Walk the Walk trilogy, Walk the Night: A Vampire, Pirate Romance. The book starts in 1719 Nassau where historically a wave of yellow fever killed many of the newly colonized Europeans. Those residents who were native to the islands had innate immunity and were spared.
Death Cannot Stop True Love by Marilyn Barr
In my work as a spiritual healer, I often have clients who request relationship tarot card readings. They all want to know if the significant other in their life is a soulmate, twin flame, or just someone placed in their path. My first question to them is always what their definitions are for these terms. Between movie magic and social media clickbait, our spiritual definitions have been lost.
Triple Cover Reveal of the Walk the Walk Series by Marilyn Barr
Do you have your sea legs? Can you Walk the Walk? Travel to 1718 and join me hearty crew of Patricia's Wish as they plunder the Caribbean. Will you swab the decks, climb the ratlines, or stand at the helm as our vampiress leads us on a merry chase toward treasure beyond your wildest imagination... The series begins with Walk the Plank where we meet Magda the Vampiress and Branko the Pirate...on the run.
Around The Fire hosted by D.V. Stone
One of the nice things about having your own blog is the ability to help a friend out. So many of us live far a field that it's nearly impossible to get everyone in the same room at the same time. Enter Zoom or as me and my cohorts call our little get togethers, Zoom Zoom. Through this bit of modern technology Marilyn Barr and I have gotten to know each other. Bonus- she's a camper too! Exciting, right? Well my friend is an amazing author and she has a new line of books coming out.
Save the Roses by Marilyn Barr
Once Valentine’s Day is over, do you have plans for your roses? Rose Water, rose dust, dried petals, what about the thorns? I’d like to share with you were favorite ways of using all the parts of the flower. Don’t throw away a powerful witchy element which has the power to boost self-love. Since the 7th century BC, roses have been bringing people together and rose water has been making people more attractive…but not in the method you would think.
Doing the Scary Stuff by Marilyn Barr
I have blogged about monsters who eat warriors, witches who eviscerate women, and Sluagh phantoms who abduct children. Today I'm blogging about the most scary thing I have ever encountered where naturally I said, "sign me up". I have created a crowd-funding initiative for my first self-published book series. What's so scary? The author puts themselves before the general public and asks for book pre-orders on their reputation and pitch alone.
Let’s Hear It For the Crones! By Marilyn Barr
Long before Santa burst onto the scene with his flashy red suit and sack of bribes, the winter holiday Epiphany was a celebration of crones. From his flying reindeer to the list that he checks twice, many of the facets of the Santa story are rooted in European traditions dating back before the birth of Jesus. Why aren’t these crones celebrated around the world like the commercial icon, Santa? I believe it is because their stories are delightfully terrifying.
You Too Can Be Paranormal! by Marilyn Barr
When I say I’m taking classes to specialize in my spiritual healing practice, I get strange looks. Many people believe you get “the call”, hang up your shingle in a remote area of a forest, and perform miracles within a few days. The reality can’t be further from the truth. Once you get “the call”, you embark on a lifelong path which includes studying under mentors for years. I am blessed to have two mentors who have been with me every step of the way.
Advance Review Copies for The Spy Who Loved My Russian Tea Cakes by Marilyn Barr
Reiki Practitioner Cassie Morgan is the black sheep of her family. She would rather work over the Christmas holidays than answer her family’s interrogation about her non-existent love life and career choices. She assures herself it has nothing to do with the handsome coma patient, Sergei Chekov who stars in her dreams. Sergei wakes from blackness and dreams of a siren’s call.
Bring Your Inner Huntress by Marilyn Barr
In the Northern hemisphere, we are one week from the Huntress Full Moon on 10/20/2021, nestled between Mabon and Samhain. While most of us are focused on getting our pumpkin spice fix, this period has a spiritual meaning in the witch’s community. The Anglo-Saxons considered this moon as their indication it was time to start preserving the meat they hunted for winter. During last month’s Harvest Moon, the tall grain crops were cut down and the landscape was revealed.
Your Day Job Is What?! by Marilyn Barr
I’m a spiritual and energetic healer. This conjures all sorts of images in people’s minds. (Cue Witch Doctor songs) I get asked if I took a pilgrimage to the middle of the jungle to live on bugs like Simba in a certain kid’s movie. They ask if I can contact their long-lost great-great-great grandparent or if I can predict their child’s future. I do own a crystal ball, but I don’t use it to tell fortunes. I love herbal remedies, but I don’t prescribe them.
The Red Tides are Coming! by Marilyn Barr
I love the beach. Collecting shells, riding the waves, and watching the weather change over the seas are some of my favorite things to do. My husband is a fervent animal rights activist, so our vacations are dependent on different threatened animal populations. An ocean animal shifter novel was an inevitability. Every September, my family travels to Anna Maria Island, Fl, to help the sea turtles make their journey from the nest to the deep waters.
You are Invited! A Friday the 13th Facebook Party
here - https://www.facebook.com/groups/169710865178935 Our first party of 2021 will be this Friday, August 13th from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm EST. Here's the schedule of hosts but I would check in periodically through the night as each author will have different games, tricks, and treats.
Pink Dolphin, You Are the Father! by Marilyn Barr
Many believe the concept of animal shifters was first documented in The Hobbit when J.R.R. Tolkien wrote about bear shifters, but this is not the case. In ancient Amazon river mythology lives a pink dolphin by day and man by night – Boto Encantado. From the Portuguese word for “enchanted”, Boto Encantado was as sexy as the shirtless shifters on today’s paranormal romance novels.
Advance Review Copies for Smoother Than Spumoni by Marilyn Barr
Susie Larkin is a dolphin shifter and heir to the humble Larkin’s Dairy Dip on Seagrass Island, FL. Pedaling ice cream from bicycle carts on the beach is just a stepping-stone for this future CEO of a frozen confection empire—or so she hopes. Frank Paulino Jr. receives his first taste of freedom from Strawberry, KY in a summer internship at Bart’s Oyster bar.

Monsters Lurking in the Old West by Marilyn Barr
I love writing a romance where someone with a hidden monster finds love despite their beastly nature. Before I fell in love with the Ephraim shifters of the Old West, I found many monsters in Arapaho legends who I considered for my upcoming release, Dance to a Wylder Beat. (What’s an Ephraim shifter?
The Music of Dance to a Wylder Beat by Marilyn Barr
To manage my sensory processing disorder, I have a few tricks to quiet my distracting senses while I write. One is to light a scented candle which corresponds to the character narrating the scene I am writing. Nartan Sagebrush’s candle scent is “Tobacco” while Olive Muegge’s scent is “Orange Clove”. Another trick is to play the couple’s song on repeat while writing. It drowns out the birds outside my kitchen window and helps my mind focus on the core issues of the story.
Failing at Vampiric Accuracy
When I was a teen, I went on a date to see “Interview with the Vampire” in theaters. While I have forgotten the name of the guy who took me, I never forgot my love of paranormal romance or my desire to write a vampire novel like Anne Rice. Fast forward to 2018 and I sat down to write the vampire book which later became Strawberry Shifters Book 1: Bear with Me. I planned to create a plausible vampire who could manage in an isolated community with a set of accommodations.
Why Market on Twitter When It's Better at Editing? ⋆ Kentuckiana Romance Writers
Every new study says the same thing: “Twitter has the worst follower–to–customer conversion ratio of all social media platforms.” If this is true, why do agents and publishers use Twitter follow numbers as the benchmark of author platform size? It’s because smart authors are not on Twitter to sell books. They are there to hone their craft and clean their manuscripts. Once I figured this out, I quit participating in follow-loops, designing ads, and chasing elusive “meaningful interactions”.
Cover Reveal for Dance to a Wylder Beat by Marilyn Barr
Have you visited Wylder, Wyoming Territory? You don't need a time machine to travel to 1878 when The Wild Rose Press has a western romance series like The Wylder West. Each story in our fictional town is written by a different author and the first seven book have been fantastic. If you follow me on BookBub, you have read the five star reviews filled with praise for the romance, humor, and action of the series. But is there room for paranormal romance stories in Wylder?
Welcome to the Campfire Blog. Hosted by D. V. Stone
Good morning ladies and welcome to my campfire. Marilyn could you do the honor of introducing us to your friend? Marilyn. Thank you for inviting me to the campfire but I couldn’t resist traveling back in time to 1878 to bring Miss Olive Muegge with me. Olive is on her way to Wylder, Wyoming Territory to start a new phase in her life and I thought she deserved a night out with the ladies. Wonderful! The camp is a place where we enjoy meeting new people from all over.
Quantum Wishes by Marilyn Barr
I have wished on stars since I was a little kid. I blame the animated movies I watched where every girl who wished and dreamed of becoming a princess did in the next ninety minutes. Whether you call it wishing, new moon affirmations, prayer, or setting a growth mindset, vocalizing what you wish to bring into your life is a powerful 2021 trend. Was it the isolation of 2020 which brought about a mass spiritual awakening or that people were given the time to sit back and daydream?
Old Ephraim and Bear Shifters of the Wild West by Marilyn Barr
I love animal shifter legends and one that caught my attention when researching for “Dance to a Wylder Beat” was the legend of the Ephraim shifters. When Lewis and Clark began their exploration of the western United States, they were surprised to find it teeming with giant bears. It is estimated, in Lewis and Clark’s time, there were over 50,000 grizzly bears and many (now extinct) species of giant black bears in their path.
Why are Strawberries so Romantic? by Marilyn Barr
Is it because they are red, heart-shaped, or a Roman remedy for halitosis? The Romans were the first to give newlyweds strawberries as wedding presents to help…ahem…with fertility. While their aphrodisiac claims have not been scientifically verified by the US FDA, the Romans were on the right track. Without the aid of modern technology such as a mass spectrophotometer, they correctly identified the berry best consumed when expanding your family.
Herbivore Shifters and Vegan Lifestyles by Marilyn Barr
Dietary restrictions are a common theme in new year’s resolutions. Many are cutting out gluten, dairy, meat, or sugar for health, monetary, or environmental reasons. Being a vegetarian from my days in the highchair, I was ecstatic when Meatless Mondays became popular. Bloggers shared inventive vegetarian recipes in every style of cuisine. Our household enjoyed a Lacto-vegan existence for years until my son was diagnosed with a severe allergy to milk at age 3.
