The European lobster (Homarus gammarus; hereafter, ‘lobster’) is a large and long-lived decapod crustacean inhabiting shallow coastal seas in the northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean. The species is highly prized as a valuable seafood commodity, with recent global landings of ∼5000 tonnes per year, but several major stocks have suffered from collapse as a result of intensive fishing pressure and insufficient management (Kleiven et al. 2012, Ellis et al. 2015, Spanier et al. 2015).
