Mark D. Ferbrache’s Biography

Mark D. Ferbrache is a retired federal law enforcement and intelligence professional with more than four decades of public service devoted to national security, counterintelligence, and institutional integrity. His career reflects extensive experience across law enforcement, intelligence, and policy oversight, with a particular focus on complex investigations, foreign intelligence threats, and the protection of U.S. national security equities.

Ferbrache served nearly 28 years as a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where his work spanned white-collar crime, national security, and counterintelligence matters. During his tenure, he held a range of supervisory and leadership roles and developed deep expertise in complex financial investigations, intelligence collection, and the oversight of sensitive operational programs. His FBI career coincided with a period of significant institutional change, marked by evolving threat landscapes, post-9/11 reforms, and increasing public scrutiny of federal law enforcement.

Following his retirement from the FBI, Ferbrache continued his public service for more than 14 years with the Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence at the U.S. Department of Energy. In that role, he supported intelligence and counterintelligence missions across the U.S. Intelligence Community, focusing on foreign intelligence threats targeting U.S. research institutions, critical infrastructure, and emerging technologies. His work at the Department of Energy reinforced his long-standing concerns about the risks posed by highly permissive research environments and insufficient counterintelligence awareness within government and academia.

Since retiring from government service, Ferbrache has turned increasingly to writing and public commentary as a means of examining the intersection of national security, institutional governance, and American civic culture. Drawing on decades of professional experience, his work explores counterintelligence failures, bureaucratic decision-making, and the cultural and political forces shaping modern institutions.

His commentary has appeared in national news outlets and on Medium, where he publishes under his independent platform, A Republic, If You Can Keep It. In addition to policy and security analysis, he occasionally writes personal essays reflecting on the professional and psychological dimensions of retirement, institutional departure, and life after relevance.

Ferbrache also serves as a guest lecturer at George Mason University, where he leads interactive discussions on FBI operations, major investigative case studies, interview and interrogation techniques, and recent controversies affecting federal law enforcement. His lectures emphasize critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and the practical realities of investigative work, and he offers instruction on additional topics upon request.

A native of Seattle, Washington, Ferbrache earned degrees from the University of Washington and Seattle University. He currently resides in Northern Virginia with his wife.
