Monsoon storms poised to return to Las Vegas Valley

A week after its hottest week of the year, Las Vegas could be heading into an active week of monsoon activity. There’s a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms today and Tuesday, the National Weather Service said. And there could be more storm activity by the end of this week. The summer monsoon season in Southern Nevada runs from late June into September.

‘Cloud of dust’ blankets Henderson, east Las Vegas; storms on horizon

Did you notice all that dust blowing around the east side of the Las Vegas Valley on Friday afternoon? It wasn’t a dust storm. It was a “cloud of dust originating from monsoon storms” in Arizona, said Sam Meltzer, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Las Vegas. It arrived by mid-afternoon, affecting Henderson, Boulder City and neighborhoods on the east side, Meltzer said. Hazy skies were still seen in those areas by early evening.

Small earthquakes rattle Southern Nevada town

Two small earthquakes struck an area northwest of Las Vegas early Thursday morning but there were no immediate reports of any injuries or serious damage. The first quake hit just after midnight in Beatty in Nye County, about 120 miles northwest of Las Vegas, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The 3.0-magnitude quake was five miles deep and was centered in an area about 29 miles southeast of town.
