Causes and consequences of Arctic amplification elucidated by coordinated multimodel experiments - Communications Earth & Environment
Abstract Human-induced warming is amplified in the Arctic, but its causes and consequences are not precisely known. Here, we review scientific advances facilitated by the Polar Amplification Model Intercomparison Project. Surface heat flux changes and feedbacks triggered by sea-ice loss are critical to explain the magnitude and seasonality of Arctic amplification.
The Sinful Messiah: The Branch Davidians in Waco believe David Koresh is Christ
Editor’s note: This is from the Sinful Messiah series by the Waco Tribune-Herald, which was originally published in February 1993 before the government standoff with the Branch Davidians. The series was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 1994. If you are a Branch Davidian, Christ lives on a threadbare piece of land 10 miles east of Waco called Mount Carmel.
The Sinful Messiah Part Five
Vernon Howell picked California to reveal the "New Light," a teaching which led to a major rift in the Branch Davidians. About four hours into a sermon at the cult's Pomona house on Aug. 5, 1989, Marc Breault saw Howell cock his head and melodramatically look up, or so it seemed to Breault. It was as if Howell was listening to someone. It was like, "Yeah, now I see the light," Breault recalled.
The Sinful Messiah Part Two
Marc Breault found what he once thought was salvation in a grocery store off the campus of Loma Linda University in Southern California. Breault was stockpiling groceries for his first week of graduate school in January 1986. His Dallas Cowboys' T-shirt caught the attention of an intense, frail-looking man named Perry Jones. Jones asked if Breault was from Texas. No, he was just a fan, Breault told Jones.
The Sinful Messiah Part Seven
Marc Breault didn't set out to lead anybody away from anything. He went to Australia to forget. It was far away from Vernon Howell and the Branch Davidians, a bizarre spinoff of the Seventh-day Adventists based 10 miles east of Waco. Breault once had counted himself among Howell's most faithful followers. Now he wanted to start anew with his wife, Elizabeth Baranyai, a native Australian and also a former cult member, and forget the last four years of his life, which he considered wasted.
The Sinful Messiah Part Six
Detective Ron Ingels thought he was back in the '60s when he entered the house at 2707 White Ave. in La Verne, Calif. Ingels accompanied Robyn Bunds to the two-story white stucco in the summer of 1990. Police had a warrant to search for her young son, Shaun Bunds. Once inside, police found the house set up like a dormitory. One room had a single bed, but all the other rooms had bunk beds. It reminded Ingels of a commune. Arriving on a Saturday, police had interrupted a Sabbath service.
The Sinful Messiah Part Three
Robyn Bunds was one of the first women in the Branch Davidians to be sexually seduced by Vernon Howell. She seemed out of place among the women in the cult. Many of them had a plain, unfinished look. Even without makeup, Bunds did not lack for polish, not with her luxurious black hair, angular face and piercing eyes. Beneath long, simple skirts, she wore stylish suede boots.
The Sinful Messiah Part Four: An incident involving Vernon Howell, a young girl
Marc Breault played a computer game — a simulation of the TV show "Star Trek" — while he waited outside the bedroom of cult leader Vernon Howell one night in 1989. A blind man staying up to see what he could see wasn't as ludicrous as it sounded. Although legally blind, Breault had some vision. When bowling, for example, he could see a "triangle of white," although he had trouble picking out individual pins.
Assessing the Spurious Impacts of Ice-Constraining Methods on the Climate Response to Sea Ice Loss Using an Idealized Aquaplanet GCM
Keywords: Sea ice; Atmospheric circulation; Climate change; Idealized models 1. Introduction The Arctic is undergoing rapid climate change, characterized by substantial sea ice loss and polar-amplified warming (Notz and Stroeve 2016; Screen and Simmonds 2010b), which has motivated study of the impacts of sea ice loss on weather and climate (Barnes and Screen 2015; Cohen et al. 2014, 2020).

Artists of Utah's 15 Bytes
It would surely come as a surprise to visit an artist’s home and find in it no works of art, no books, and most unlikely of all, little evidence of the owners’ creativity. The home of Mark and Kari England, a charming house on a street devoid of traffic, is as far from that extreme as a visitor may imagine.
Waco and the media
Mt. Carmel was torched thirty years ago. Whoever the culprit was is anyone’s guess – and it’s the most famous conspiracy left in the ashes of that compound. Whether it was the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms or the religious group of the Davidians who set the building ablaze, it still finished off the 51-day stand-off that captivated the citizens of Waco, Texas, in early 1993.
OPINION/LETTER: Rhein knows it takes cooperation to get things done in government
To whom it may concern, It is with great pleasure that I offer my enthusiastic support for Neil Rhein’s candidacy for a second term as a member of the Select Board. I have known Neil for over 20 years both personally and professionally, and I am proud to call him a friend.
Tokyo 2020 gives GB the chance to write another chapter in rich Olympic history
When you postpone an Olympic Games for the first time in peacetime it's hardly surprising that there is a whole host of unintended consequences that start to jump out at you. Fortunately, they are not all bad ones. At the British Olympic Association (BOA), we are particularly proud of our heritage and history, and not least the part that British Olympians have played in creating that golden thread through time.
Modeling the breakup of tabular icebergs
Abstract Nearly half of the freshwater flux from the Antarctic Ice Sheet into the Southern Ocean occurs in the form of large tabular icebergs that calve off the continent’s ice shelves. However, because of difficulties in adequately simulating their breakup, large Antarctic icebergs to date have either not been represented in models or represented but with no breakup scheme such that they consistently survive too long and travel too far compared with observations.
Tropical climate responses to projected Arctic and Antarctic sea-ice loss
Abstract Arctic and Antarctic sea-ice extent are both projected to dramatically decline over the coming century. The effects of Arctic sea-ice loss are not limited to the northern high latitudes, and reach deep into the tropics. Yet little is known about the effects of future Antarctic sea-ice loss outside of the southern high latitudes. Here, using a fully coupled climate model, we investigate the tropical response to Antarctic sea-ice loss and compare it with the response to Arctic sea-ice loss.
BLACK MONDAY: More than 80 feared dead in compound blaze
A compound built to be heaven on earth turned into a funeral pyre Monday, with more than 80 Branch Davidians feared dead from a fire they apparently set.Cult leader Vernon Howell, who claimed to be Christ, apparently died in the fire.FBI Special Agent Bob Ricks said some of the nine cult members who survived the holocaust reported that at least three separate fires were set just after noon Monday.
The Sinful Messiah: Part One
If you are a Branch Davidian, Christ lives on a threadbare piece of land 10 miles east of Waco called Mount Carmel. He has dimples, claims a ninth-grade education, married his legal wife when she was 14, enjoys a beer now and then, plays a mean guitar, reportedly packs a 9mm Glock and keeps an arsenal of military assault rifles, and willingly admits that he is a sinner without equal.David Koresh is now his legal name.He changed it two years ago in California, supposedly to enhance his career...
