Culturing of Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells on an Ex Vivo Model of Aged Human Bruch's Membrane
Aged human Bruch's membrane (extracellular matrix) contributes to the disease progression of AMD and thus there is a need to understand how this altered matrix contributes to RPE cell dysfunction. Given the lack of sufficient animal models to study age-related changes in AMD, ex vivo model systems that mimic the effects of disease can serve as a valuable tool to understand the pathophysiology.
Three Questions: Prof. Rodrigo Canales on the Broken Promise of DACA
1. What has been the impact of the DACA policy on the lives of undocumented immigrants who arrived in the U.S. as children since it was instituted by the Obama administration? It is hard to overstate the impact that the program had on these individuals. It is important to remember that many of these kids only learned that they were not legally American relatively late in their lives, sometimes only because they became old enough to drive or because they started thinking about college.
Social Media, the Corporation, and the State
On October 31, lawyers for Facebook, Google, and Twitter explained to the U.S. Congress their business practices on privacy and political advertising. Governments around the world wait and watch Washington before deciding on managing the novel information age interactions between economics and politics. Geographically, the earth’s land mass is divided into approximately 200 countries, each with political sovereignty and some control over its territory and people.
Extracellular matrix nitration alters growth factor release and activates bioactive complement in human retinal pigment epithelial cells
We have shown previously that non-enzymatic nitration (NEN) of the extracellular matrix (ECM), which serves as a model of Bruch’s membrane (BM) aging, has a profound effect on the behavior of the overlying retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells, including altered phagocytic ability, reduced cell adhesion, and inhibition of proliferation.
