Chama Stuck for Another Year with State Police Contract
Caught by a 180-day notice clause, rather than the standard 30, Chama Village Councilors voted during their May 26 regular meeting to maintain the New Mexico State Police as the local law enforcement agency. “We thought it was a 30-day notice to cancel,” said Mayor Billy Elbrock. “We’ll see what happens next year.” At the April meeting the council had voted to appoint the Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Office, with the intention of changing of the guard July 1.

Village Councilor Ernest Vigil supported the vote over concern for the village’s recent trouble with water quality.
Chama Councilors Mull $1 Million in Water Repair Bills
The Chama Village Council during its Aug. 26 meeting focused on almost $1 million in mounting bills, for work performed on the water plant the last two years, including during the boil water advisory. “Is the village going to be held accountable for all of this?” Councilor Ernest Vigil asked. “I mean what exactly happened?” Mayor Billy Elbrock said, “We may never know what happened.” In 2018 the village contracted with GandyDancer LLC to rehabilitate the water treatment pad.
