It is a great couple of weeks for theatre in WA, and amongst the best of the best is Western Sky’s Urinetown, perhaps the funniest musical you will ever see. Expertly directed by Andrew Baker, lovingly and superbly performed and accompanied by a top-notch ensemble, it is perhaps not surprising that this show is all but sold out.
In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides that he’s had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom! “Urinetown” is a satirical comedy that premiered in 2001 and won three Tony Awards.
