Riptide’s Reflections | What’s next for Tulane baseball?
Riptide’s Reflections is The Tulane Hullabaloo’s column talking all things Tulane athletics. As the baseball season ends, Tulane University is left with more questions than answers. On the one hand, the Green Wave had a historically bad season where the team finished 19-42 and simply played bad baseball at times. At the same time, the team won the American Athletic Conference tournament and made the postseason for the first time in seven years.
Tulane baseball ends season at Baton Rouge Regional
It was miraculous that the Tulane Green Wave baseball team made the postseason. Tulane finished the year 19-42, setting a new mark for most losses in a single campaign. Despite their losing record, the Green Wave won the American Athletic Conference tournament and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016.
Cougars sweep Tulane on Senior weekend
Tulane University baseball lost all three games to the visiting University of Houston Cougars in the final home series for the Green Wave. Knights take down Tulane baseball in weekend clash

OPINION | Tulane to Pac-12 is a terrible idea
Rumors that Tulane University would leave the American Athletic Conference and join the Pacific-12 Conference recently resurfaced. While those speculations are unlikely, there are several reasons why Tulane, a school on the Gulf Coast, should not join the Pac-12, a conference along the Pacific coast. The primary incentive for a Tulane conference move is money. Currently, the AAC has a media rights deal with ESPN set to expire in 2032.
Spears, Williams headline Tulane’s draft class
Tyjae Spears and Dorian Williams were drafted into the NFL, becoming the latest of the Green Wave to join the league. They headline a draft class that also saw eight other Tulanians signed as undrafted free agents. With the 81st pick in the draft, the Tennessee Titans selected running back Spears in the third round. Spears will complement all-pro running back Derrick Henry in the backfield.
Blown saves cost Tulane baseball against top teams
Tulane University baseball competed against two of the best teams in the nation last week. Riptide’s Reflections | Awakening Sluggerbirds
Riptide’s Reflections is The Tulane Hullabaloo’s column talking all things Tulane athletics. When a bird first tries to fly, it jumps out of the nest and tumbles to the ground. It must first learn to tumble and then glide before it starts to flap its wings and soar. The hitting corp for Tulane University baseball, the Sluggerbirds, seemingly has hit all three of these phases multiple times this season; however, the team is trending in a positive direction.
Tulane baseball drops series to lowly Bearcats
Tulane baseball continued their rough season with a series loss to the lowly University of Cincinnati Bearcats. From the Basement | Is Jokic deserving of MVP three-peat?
Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid or Giannis Antetokounmpo — with less than a month to go in the NBA season, it seems clear that these three big men will be the finalists for MVP for the second year running. Jokic could potentially win for the third-straight year. But does Jokic, a player with no finals appearances, currently tied for 17th in league scoring, really deserve such a historic accomplishment?
Riptide’s Reflections | Tale of two Jays
Riptide’s Reflections is The Tulane Hullabaloo’s column talking all things Tulane athletics. Tuesday night’s baseball game between Tulane and LSU was all about the two Jays. In the home dugout, Green Wave head coach Jay Uhlman is leading a struggling team who has yet to win 10 games this season. In the visiting dugout, Tigers head coach Jay Johnson is leading the best team in the nation with an all-time great offense.
Hunter faces biggest test yet as Cook transfers to LSU
Everyone knows the saying “what goes up, must come down.” This is a concept all too familiar in college athletics as programs often rise to prominence with the recruitment and development of elite athletes, all for it to come crashing down when its athletes depart from the program. Top programs like Duke, Kentucky, Kansas and Connecticut maintain their dominance through a strong sports culture and a timeless pitch to prospective new players: winning.
Women’s tennis last three matches end in nail-biting results
Sports Tennis Jake Blancher, Associate Sports Editor The Tulane women’s tennis team strung together a series of thrilling matches, all three of which were decided by 3-4 or 4-3 scores. In the pivotal No. 2 doubles court, graduate student Adelaide Lavery and sophomore Jiayun Zhu were narrowly defeated 6-4, ceding a point to the Rams.
Pelicans finish regular season in play-in spot
After gaining momentum beating two of the NBA bottom feeders — the San Antonio Spurs and the Houston Rockets — the New Orleans Pelicans still had a tough road ahead. Even after those two wins, the Pelicans were still the 12th seed, meaning they would miss the playoffs and play-in tournament entirely. It seems the players became aware of the urgent situation, as the Pels went 7-3 to close out the last 10 games of the season, with six of their seven wins coming against teams already in the playoffs.
Tulane baseball starts .500 in conference play
Tulane baseball started American Athletic Conference play 3-3 after the two series. Jackson Linn: Shipped down from Boston
As winter becomes spring in New Orleans, the first few seconds of the song “Your Love” by The Outfield blares from the speakers at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. Into the batter’s box steps Jackson Linn, Tulane’s super sophomore left fielder, in his short and upright batting stance. Long before he could step into the box wearing Tulane’s famous Slugger Birds, though, he was a highly recruited Northeastern baseball prodigy who had to navigate high school baseball, the MLB draft and COVID-19.
Tulane hammers Washington, swept by Hawaii
After winning their first series of the season against the Columbia University Lions, Tulane baseball traveled back to the Pacific for a midweek matchup against the University of Washington Huskies and a weekend series against the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa Rainbow Warriors. After the four games, the Green Wave are 6-18 on the season. On Wednesday, March 22, the Wave visited Husky Ballpark in Seattle to play Washington.
Nick Anderson talks draft process, Pro Day
Nick Anderson did not spend a lot of time celebrating Tulane football’s historic Cotton Bowl victory before he was back in the gym. “I may have celebrated that night. And then, me and [former Tulane safety] Larry Brooks were back working out two days later. And then I came back and started training with Coach [Kurt] Hester around like January 6, and I’ve been training for [Tulane’s] Pro Day ever since,” the former Tulane linebacker and captain said. Incidentally, Jan.
Hebert, pitching sees Tulane baseball past Columbia
Tulane University baseball won its first series of the season after taking two of three games against the Columbia University Lions. In a roller coaster weekend matchup, the Green Wave pitchers pushed the batters, led by center fielder Brady Hebert, towards a win. On Friday, March 17, Tulane hit a low point with an uninspired defeat to the Lions. The Sluggerbirds were thoroughly grounded with Green Wave hitters striking out 17 times, only getting four hits and going 0-5 with the bases loaded.

Riptide’s Reflections | Bullpen blues
Riptide’s Reflections is The Tulane Hullabaloo’s column talking all things Tulane athletics. Tulane baseball’s bullpen has pitched poorly this season. The team is 3-14, but with slightly better relief pitching, the team could realistically add at least five more wins to their total. The low point of the season for the bullpen thus far was the midweek series against Campbell Camels when the 16 pitchers were used across two games and gave up a combined 30 runs.
Tulane baseball cratering despite late comeback bids
Tulane baseball continues its non-conference schedule with series losses to the No. 24 Campbell University Camels and against the University of Pennsylvania Quakers. After the weekend, the Green Wave is 3-14 on the season. On March 7-8, the Camels dominated in two games played at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. Women’s basketball out of AAC Tournament after ECU loss
The Green Wave ended the season 7-9 in conference record and entered the women’s basketball American Athletic Conference Tournament in the middle of the pack. Ranked as a sixth seed, Tulane faced off against No. 11 seed University of Cincinnati, with whom they split the regular season. Their first two losses of the span came on Feb. 28 and March 1 against the South Alabama Jaguars and the New Orleans Privateers, respectively. Against the Jaguars, Tulane surrendered four runs in the first three innings, a deficit they were unable to surmount for the remainder of the game.
From the Basement | Who could play quarterback for Saints?
Ever since Drew Brees decided to hang up his cleats following the 2020 season, the New Orleans Saints have struggled to find a steady replacement. Instead, they’ve had five different starting quarterbacks, all en route to two disappointing seasons. While not quite the ‘aints of 1980 lore, the franchise is not where it wants to be. The answer is in limbo as to who will take the snaps when the next NFL season commences in 2023.
Injuries continue to ground Pelicans season
After the NBA All-Star break, the New Orleans Pelicans look to resume their up-and-down season in the absence of star forward, Zion Williamson. The Pelicans began the 2022-23 NBA season with the franchise’s best start, 18-8, good for the No. 1 spot in the Western Conference. Williamson was an early MVP candidate and the Pels showed strong promise for the season with the help of Brandon Ingram, averaging 22.9 points per game, and CJ McCollum, averaging 21.0 points per game.
Riptide’s Reflections | Back Jay Uhlman and back his players
Baseball Riptide's Reflections Sports Mark Keplinger, Sports Editor Riptide’s Reflections is The Tulane Hullabaloo’s column talking all things Tulane athletics. It is fair to say that the first two weeks of the season have gone very poorly for Tulane baseball. In his short tenure as head coach, Jay Uhlman is probably under the most pressure he has faced to date.

The Green Wave began the month with a three game winning streak, punctuated with a massive win on the road against tournament-bound University of Memphis.
Tulane baseball drops first 2 series

On the first of the month, they took on the SMU Mustangs, a struggling squad that had lost twice as many conference games as they had won going into the contest.
From the Basement | Should referees be fined for mistakes?
The other weekend my Saturday night was ruined. As a longtime Los Angeles Lakers fan, I was thrilled to see a struggling Lakers team in a tie game against our — yes I group myself with the team — rivals, the top-seeded Boston Celtics. More than that, coming out of a timeout with 4 seconds left and the ball, our fate was in LeBron James’ hands. Or so I thought. When James drove to the basket at full speed, Jayson Tatum slapped his left arm while going for the block.
The Tulane Hullabaloo
The Tulane men’s tennis team started 2023 by going 1-2 in their three matchups, including losing both times on a rough Mississippi road trip. While the fall session consists of invitationals with multiple schools competing at a tournament, the spring tennis season is defined by matchups against individual schools. On Jan. 20, the Furman Paladins came to New Orleans to take on the Green Wave.
Track, field has strong January showings
Sports Track and Field Jake Blancher, Associate Sports Editor Clearly keeping atop their New Year’s resolutions, the women’s Tulane track and field team had strong showings in their two January meets, with numerous top 10 finishes across a wide variety of events. On Jan. 13 — the Ides of January — in Lexington, Kentucky, the women had particularly impressive performances in the 600-meter, 800-meter, pole vault, triple jump, shot put and the mile competing in the Rod McCravy Memorial meet.
Pelicans spiral without All-Star talent
The New Orleans Pelicans are in the middle of their worst stretch of the 2022-23 NBA season. In early December, the Pelicans were the of a very competitive Western Conference, and they were on pace for a .

Riptide’s Reflections: Game, set, match
The miraculous 46-45 comeback win against the University of Southern California in the Cotton Bowl Classic was one for the ages. So why then, was the game decided by a freshman tight end most fans hadn’t heard of before this game?
Disappointing loss to Carolina closes Saints’ season
In one of the most disappointing matchups in recent memory for Saints fans, the 7-10 New Orleans Saints fell 10-7 to the Carolina Panthers in the final game of their 2022-23 campaign. After falling to their division rivals at Caesars Superdome, any hope of the Saints reaching the NFL playoffs this season has been diminished. The Saints managed to get on the board first when Andy Dalton found Chris Olave for a 25-yard touchdown strike on the game’s opening drive.
