A Step Towards Normalcy At The Jones Beach Airshow - NYCAviation
A year after being cancelled at the height of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the 2021 Bethpage Federal Credit Union Airshow at Jones Beach will be returning to the skies May 29th and 30th. While the cancelation of last year’s airshow was disappointing, it was nothing close to what many in our community endured personally, financially and from a health perspective. Just one year ago, many were unsure when or even if things would return to normal.
When The Unthinkable Happens: A Memoir of Being a Witness to a Crash - NYCAviation
“Why do people go to air shows?” That was the question posed by a local reporter to a small group of aviation focused journalists. A group I was a part of. Another journalist from my group chimed in immediately. He spoke of the aircraft of our nation’s military. An air show is, after all, one of the few times we get to see a part of our nation’s military might in person. Next, he spoke of the warbirds, incredible flying machines in their own right from a bygone era.
The Legal Responsibility of Passengers During an Airplane Evacuation - NYCAviation
The importance of evacuating an airplane after an accident cannot be overstressed. Except when depleted of fuel, aircraft have a strong propensity to burn after impact. Once the aircraft starts burning, statistically you’ve got 90 seconds to get out of there alive. After that point, your chance of making it out alive drops precipitously, and after two minutes, statistically, you’re dead. Nearly 25 years ago, TWA 843 slammed back on the runway at JFK after aborting the takeoff.
Formation Flying In A Motorglider: We’re Going To Do What!?! - NYCAviation
To anyone who doubts that the aviation community is, by and large, a close knit family of like-minded geeks, one must look no further than some of the grassroots events at their local airports. Through a happy coincidence, I found myself at Livingston County’s Spencer J. Hardy Airport on a warm summer weekend to observe and photograph a Red Star Pilots Association formation flight training event hosted by Hangar 639.
Sounds Like a Great Place for an Airshow! - NYCAviation
“Skyscrapers on one side, Canada on the other, Class Bravo airspace above, and an international shipping lane below. Cool! Let’s put on an airshow!,” said Steve “Dogbag” Tupper, the Air Boss, or overall commander of this year’s Detroit River Days Tuskegee Airshow. Tupper is a FAST qualified lead pilot and one of the driving forces behind the show.
Checking Out The 2018 Air Show at Quonset Point
The skies over North Kingstown once again played host to some of the rock stars of the airshow industry for the 2018 installment of the Rhode Island National Guard Open House at Quonset Point. This year’s show was held June 9th and 10th, and featured the long awaited return of the US Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, having last performed at the show in 2015.
Airshow Review: Thunder Over Michigan - NYCAviation
The annual Thunder Over Michigan Airshow, presented by Ypsilanti’s Yankee Air Museum, returned vintage and modern aircraft to the skies over Southeast Michigan this past Labor Day Weekend. Thunder Over Michigan is known worldwide as a premier warbird show, and the organizers have had success in recent years attracting modern jet teams to expand their traditional flying program of vintage fighters, bombers, and transport aircraft.
The Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach: Celebrating 15 years of Greatness - NYCAviation
Weather reports for the holiday weekend are looking good, as several hundred thousand spectators are expected to attend what has come to be a Long Island tradition for the Memorial Day weekend. Celebrating its 15th year, the Bethpage Airshow at Jones Beach will once again once again take flight this Saturday and Sunday. As usual, this year’s show features some of the industry’s top performers.
A Flight Through History: Selfridge ANGB Celebrates its First 100 Years - NYCAviation
Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Southeastern Michigan celebrated its 100th anniversary with an open house and airshow headlined by the Thunderbirds and featuring one of the best flying lineups of any airshow this year. Located about 20 miles northeast of Detroit on the shore of Lake St. Clair, the base is named after Army Lt. Thomas Selfridge, who, in 1908, became the first person to die in an airplane crash.
Flying Into History: The Breitling DC-3 World Tour - NYCAviation
Swiss watchmaker Breitling has a long standing tradition of promoting its line of high end aviation watches with impressive aviation events. 2017 saw the “DC-3 World Tour” kick off in March and we were lucky enough to catch up with it in Massachusetts. At the end of the world tour, the Breitling DC-3, originally delivered on March 12, 1940 to American Airlines, will become the oldest aircraft to circumnavigate the globe.
Making Rain Shine: Behind the Scenes with the 2017 USAF Viper Demo Team - NYCAviation
While the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels and the U.S. Air Force’s Thunderbirds are the undisputed kings in the eyes of American airshow fans, the military’s single ship demo teams also know how to bring the noise – and are headliners in their own right! Demonstrating the high performance characteristics of the F-16 in the subsonic and transonic flight envelope, the Viper Demo Team packs pride, professionalism and dedication into a 15-minute aerial demonstration.
Norwegian Air International Launches Flights to Stewart International Airport - NYCAviation
A new chapter in the history of Stewart International Airport (SWF) began Thursday evening when Norwegian Air International launched flights between Stewart and Edinburgh Airport in Scotland. The route launch marks the first scheduled international and transatlantic flights from the airport in New York’s Hudson Valley. By the end of July, Norwegian will have three daily flights from Stewart to points in Europe.
Hands on History With The Geico Skytypers - NYCAviation
The evening before media day at the Rhode Island Airshow was progressing like any other: Dinner was being cooked, camera batteries were charging, lenses were out awaiting cleaning and a blower was at the ready to clear pesky dust spots off sensors in anticipation for the photo opportunities in the morning.
SLIDESHOW: Smoke, Wings, and Noise Fill the Skies Over Rhode Island - NYCAviation
For the second consecutive year the organizers of the Rhode Island Air National Guard Open House and Airshow found themselves in an unenviable position. After the Thunderbirds cancelled a week before the show in 2016, this year’s headlining act, the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, entered a safety stand down following an incident at a show where they had to break formation.
Forecast for an Air Show: The 14th Annual Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach - NYCAviation
Despite some questionable weather forecasts for the holiday weekend, the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach will look to kick things off this Memorial Day Weekend over the skies of Long Island for the 14th straight year. Headlined this year by the United States Air Force Thunderbirds, there is more to this year’s show than purely what’s going on in the sky.
PHOTOS: Checking Out The Performers At The MCAS Beaufort Airshow - NYCAviation
This past weekend, Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort hosted their bi-annual airshow. The base is located in Beaufort, SC, approximately halfway between Charleston, SC an Savannah, GA. This year’s show featured a wide assortment of aircraft operated by the United States Marine Corps, a United States Air Force F-16 demo, a United States Coast Guard Dolphin helicopter, and the United States Navy’s Blue Angels.
PHOTOS: Patrouille de France Returns To The Skies Over Stewart Airport - NYCAviation
After a stop in New York and photo shoot over the Statue of Liberty in March, the French Air Force aerobatic team “Patrouille de France” once again found themselves at Stewart International Airport following the western swing of their 2017 American Tour. The team performed for a small crowd of VIPs and media in one of the final destinations in the United States before concluding the 12-stop tour in Canada.

There is no clear or known cause, or contributions to it, at this time.
Horsepower (Not Horses) Takes Center Stage at Famed Ascot Racecourse - NYCAviation
After the dust settled at the famed Ascot Racecourse, an American and an Australian emerged victorious. Rather than the equine athletes usually competing at the venue however, the victors took their wins on composite wings. Australian Matt Hall took the win in the top Master Class in his MXS-R after a thrilling final four round, and American Kevin Coleman took the first win of his young Challenger Class career following three second place finishes in his prior races.
PHOTOS: The Thunder Rolls at Shaw Air Force Base - NYCAviation
It is no coincidence that the official title of this show (Thunder Over the Midlands, at Shaw AFB) makes no mention of planes or flying. To call it an airshow would be selling the event short. Yes, the USAF Thunderbirds were the undeniable headliner, and 90% of the show was aviation related. My sole purpose for attending was collecting the best collection of images of the flight demonstrations, and perhaps some static displays as time permitted prior to the flying.
The 2016 Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach Gets Ready to Take Flight
A forecast for temperatures in the low 80’s and sunny skies will look to create the perfect beach weekend for both air show fans and beachgoers alike, as the 2016 Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach takes flight this Saturday and Sunday headlined by the United States Navy Blue Angels. “It is a very exciting time for us,” states George Gorman, Deputy Regional Director of New York State Office and Parks.
PHOTOS: The Three Remaining WB-57Fs Take Flight Over Houston - NYCAviation
Residents of Houston were treated to a once-in-a-lifetime sight last week as three Cold War-era jets took part in a special formation flight over the Space City. Manufactured by Glenn L. Martin Company in the mid-1950s and reborn as “long wing” variants under the General Dynamics RB-57F program in the 1960s, the aircraft are the only remaining examples of the B-57 in service.
PHOTOS: The Inaugural New York Air Show Soars Over The Hudson Valley - NYCAviation
The first ever New York Air Show came to Stewart International Airport this past weekend. The show featured warbirds, the aerobatics of Mike Wiskus, and several military demo teams. It was seen by thousands inside the gates and hundreds of thousands outside the gates. The show was also marred by tragedy. On Friday, performer Andrew Wright was killed when his carbon fiber Giles G-202 crashed during a practice run.

Analysis: A Navy SEAL Breakdown of the Sunwing SWAT Takedown - NYCAviation
Last week, on the morning of July 25th, Sunwing flight 772 departed from Toronto Pearson International Airport for Panama. The flight was carrying 183 passengers, most of whom were headed toward a relaxing tropical vacation. That idea was interrupted less than an hour into the flight with a wild outburst from a passenger who became irate, apparently over the price of duty-free cigarettes (yes, we are serious).
Up Close and Personal With a C-17 Globemaster
An aerial pairing of the C-17 Globemaster and the KC-135 Stratotanker was the recent highlight at a media day in which journalists were afforded the rare opportunity to perform a dual flight with both the 434th Air Refueling Wing and the 445th Airlift Wing at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. The 434th’s KC-135s had been temporary relocated from Grissom Air Force Base to Wright Patterson in Ohio during an extended runway maintenance period at Grissom.
The Flyover: Keeping a Tradition Alive - NYCAviation
It had become a tradition, one we grew accustomed to and even expected. If you were there you couldn’t help but to look up and be moved and if viewing from television you knew what to watch for as the National Anthem came to an end, I’m talking about the flyover. Since the beginning of flight, flyovers were used to showcase and present aircraft to spectators on the ground.
Smoke On! The 2014 Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach - NYCAviation
The annual 2014 Bethpage Federal Credit Union Air Show at Jones Beach took off this past holiday weekend for its 11th consecutive year. While weather affected Friday’s practice show, Saturday and Sunday couldn’t have been better with a combined two day attendance of 311,000 spectators. With last year’s show overshadowed by military sequestration and rebuilding post Superstorm Sandy, 2014 looked to get things back on track.
We’re Back! The Rhode Island National Guard Open House Air Show - NYCAviation
While many civilian airshows pressed on last year despite the lack of military participation associated with sequestration, there were just as many that did not. The Rhode Island Air National Guard Open House in Quonset, RI was one of the latter. Celebrating World War II History With The Collings Foundation
Aviation during the World War II era was a unique moment in history in terms of both aircraft production and how airborne warfare was conducted. Tens of thousands of fighters and bombers were built by each of the major combatants in a conflict where sheer numbers of aircraft were the only way to effectively fight the war from above. Often times hundreds of aircraft would be launched on a mission, with the goal of destroying an area that was only the size of a few city blocks.
Budget Carrier Allegiant Air Coming To MacArthur, Returns To Stewart

On Tuesday morning, Allegiant announced that they will be returning to Stewart International Airport, approximately 50 miles north of New York City.
The Aircraft Black Box: Is It Time For Video Recording?
Aircraft flight data and cockpit voice recorders have advanced dramatically in recent years. They have transitioned from an analog recording of a very small set of flight parameters, to advanced digital solid state recordings of over a hundred critical parameters and data points. Time after time, these “black boxes” help to unlock the mystery of crashes in ways that nothing else can.
