The Tao of Willie Nelson
By Mark Roy Long On Saturday night, the Hollywood Bowl was transformed into a cosmic honky-tonk, where the twang of guitars and the crooning of music legends reverberated beneath a canopy of stars. The stage, bathed in a warm amber light, became a beacon for the faithful who had gathered to celebrate the 90th birthday of Willie Nelson, the sage of the outlaw country movement.
Happy Birthday Steven Tyler: Celebrating the Aerosmith Rocker’s Best Moments
Today marks a birthday many people, including Steven Tyler, thought they’d never see: his own. The now-73-year-old lead singer of Aerosmith was one half of the so-called “Toxic Twins” with guitarist Joe Perry. As the driving creative forces in Aerosmith, they melded the look and sound of British bands The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. The result was an enduring legacy in the rock pantheon from the 1970s up to today.
Interim Final Rule: PPP Loan Forgiveness | JD Supra
On May 22, 2020, the Department of the Treasury, in coordination with the Small Business Administration (“SBA”), issued an Interim Final Rule – Business Loan Program Temporary Changes; Paycheck Protection Program – Requirements – Loan Forgiveness (the “IFR”) addressing issues related to the loan forgiveness aspects of the Paycheck Protection Program under the CARES Act. The IFR is effective immediately, but subject to a 30-day comment period.
Review: I'm With Her provides soundrack for geography of United States
At first blush, I’m With Her doesn’t register as the type of band to be featured at Spoleto Festival. The fact that it’s made up of younger performers isn’t at all remarkable, of course; that is, until you discover that the band is touring their debut record, last year’s “See You Around.” The key lies in Sarah Jarosz, Aoife O’Donovan and Sara Watkins’ 11 solo albums, and many more recorded with various other bands, notably Nickel Creek and Crooked Still.
Review: Punch Brothers, ever raising the bar, are inspired by the Holy City
Punch Brothers have performed on several of Charleston’s stages over the years, including the Cistern on the College of Charleston’s campus. Each time they raise the bar, and Sunday’s Spoleto Festival show blew the lid off on an already record-breaking steamy day in Charleston.

Food to go: The triangle's best food events for March 2-8
Since 1986, A Toast to the Triangle has gathered together some of the area's top kitchens and bars to raise money for Raleigh's long-running Tammy Lynn Center for Developmental Disabilities. For the last two years, the event's even surpassed the $200,000 mark. Each year, vendors win juried categories ("best appetizer," "best entrée," and so on), prompting the chefs to vie for prime palate pleasers.
Vote Early, Vote Often
Last week we wrote about how the Republicans' new maps accomplish an old goal: to ensure that, no matter the will of the voters, North Carolina sends three times as many Republicans as Democrats to Washington ["Pick Your Own Voters: A Legislative Adventure!" Feb. 24]. On our Facebook page, Ronald Tucceri says Democrats need to wake up: "This is why Democrats have to vote, and not just in presidential elections.

Your Participation is Mandatory: The INDY’s 2016 Primary Endorsements
As we write this, we don't know the results of Super Tuesday's primaries. But we do know that, regardless of what's happening at the top of the ticket, the March 15 elections are vital for North Carolina's future: they'll help determine not only who claims the governor's office and the Council of State, but also whether the Democrats will chip away at the Republican supermajority in the state House.

Live: A Bland Bryson Tiller Sleepwalks at The Ritz
In a post-Drake world—where hip, emotionally vulnerable music has returned to the Top 40—we’ve seen the zeitgeist turn toward an archetype: the masculine, sensitive R&B star. I can’t imagine anyone following pop music somehow avoiding this trend; it sometimes seems to be the moment's de facto soundtrack.

Live: How Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage Left Me Stranded in Space
On Thursday night, I went to seeat DPAC . It is a live orchestral performance ofmusic, accompanied by a cinematic clip show. A week has passed, and I'm just now forming my opinion.I was supposed to review the show. Simple enough, I thought: I would bang out a quick few paragraphs before lunch the next day. But I typed and deleted, typed and deleted, typed and deleted, and eventually just started to forget about the assignment.
Snap Judgments | Back Talk | Indy Week
Lots of reaction this week to our fancy-pants redesign: "Snap judgment on the new @indyweek look/feel/layout: I like it," tweeted @MaroonedChris. "Pretty excited about @indyweek's redesign, but the best part is the style change to include Oxford commas. Thank god," added @izza_woj. Similarly, @bridgcd tweeted: "Arguably the best part of the @indyweek redesign is their usage of the serial/Oxford comma. THUMBS WAY UP." Most—though not all—of the feedback we've received has been positive.

Florida must win at home
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Florida’s postseason fate probably will be decided on the road. The Gators (15-8, 6-4 SEC) play four of their final six regular-season games away from home, a tough stretch that begins next week and includes trips to Georgia, South Carolina and LSU. That daunting slate makes this week’s games in the comfy confines of the O’Connell Center, beginning Tuesday night against Mississippi, almost must-win matchups for coach Mike White’s team.

Bern, Baby, Bern
"In the proud tradition of Bobby Kennedy, let's 'dream of things that never were and say why not!'" So writes Janice Vuncannon Sears, one of several commenters on Bob Geary's column last week ["Believe in Bernie," Jan. 27]. "I'm not a millennial; my sons are," echoes Doug Roach. "Ever since Gene and then Bobby initially won me over in 1968, I've been a fan and a supporter of what many yet see as political lost causes. Senator Sanders is the right man for the job at this time.

We found Ashley Christensen's stolen cooker-12 different times.
The all-points bulletin arrived on the morning of January 7. The night before, someone or something (Sasquatch, perhaps? No, a centaur) had cut through the locks of Aux, the commissary kitchen belonging to award-winning chef, service-industry sergeant and ambitious restaurateur Ashley Christensen. They'd stolen her prized cooker. A gift from Southern pitmaster Nick Pihakis following Christensen's James Beard Award victory in 2014, the cooker often accompanied the chef to charity events.
Stop public shaming
Regarding the inspiring piece "Grease the wheel" (Jan. 20): What incredible work Believers United for Progress and Elder Kasib Abdullah are doing to address poverty and the inequality and racism that have undermined Hayti residents' historic pursuits of vibrant community. BUFP gives youth nourishment and opportunities to dream their dreams in Hayti and beyond! Yet even heroes have their blind spots, such as carrying signs that read "Hoes Have/Spread AIDS" to disperse sex workers on the street.
Live: Still Ratatat after all these years
Let’s go back a little bit: In 2004, a relatively unknown Brooklyn band called Ratatat released a self-titled debut on XL Recordings. Within a few years, Ratatat became one of the largest success stories in indie music. Their pared-down instrumental rock fused guitar grandeur with hip-hop and the squawky remnants of electroclash to create something that was sonically excitingaccessible. On 2006’s, we got a second serving. And on 2008’s, a third.

Caltrop's Murat Dirlik left the band and the Triangle for Costa Rica. But not before making a heartbroken stunner.
In North Carolina, it's sweater weather. The wind is cool and damp, the ground riddled with strata of soggy, decaying leaves. But not so along Costa Rica's western shore, where, not far from celebrated Pacific swells, Murat Dirlik sits outside in the middle of a sunny Playa Grande afternoon. He's shirtless and drinking homemade wine. "I'm totally addicted to surfing. It's my favorite thing to do," says Dirlik.

I wanted to take an opportunity to tell you how much I enjoyed your article ("Dairy Christmas," Dec. 16). It was written eloquently. I would ask for you to do another article on all the gentlemen, and especially about Roger Nutter and Bob Nutter's partner, Mike Strowd. He is the man behind the scenes who spends most of his time, hard work and puts his whole heart into taking care of the cows so that eggnog, chocolate milk and ice cream can be made and enjoyed.

Out with the old, in with the blues: Caltrop bassist Murat Dirlik releases wonderful, heartbroken solo LP
Caltrop was a lot of things, but it was rarely gentle. A heavy, heavy band from Chapel Hill that edged blues-rock into metal territory with enviable technicality, the group bid farewell at a February show at The Kraken. Guitarist Sam Taylor is in Morehead City now raising a family, while bassist Murat Dirlik moved to Costa Rica. Before the move, though, Dirlik laid down a heartbreaker of a solo record, Songs From the Last Time I Died.
The Charming Youngsters made Middleweights, one of the Triangle's best indie rock records in 2015. Are they gone for good, though?
It's a Monday night in Durham, and Nolan Smock is tired. In recent weeks, the 31-year-old singer-songwriter has been sorting through the logistics of his January wedding to his bandmate Kathryn Jackson—KJ, as he calls her. Smock has been working shifts at Bull City Records. And now he's at the storage-unit practice space of his band, The Charming Youngsters, demoing new ideas. Some of these sketches may become songs on a solo release, or they may become Charming Youngsters tunes.
Response to North Carolina's new logo
The new North Carolina logo with the tree looks like an unsuccessful high-school art project (Triangulator, Dec. 9). The capital N and C are just plain awful. No competent typographer would distort those letters like that. And as for the tree, take a look at the Stanford University logo. Looks pretty similar to me. Four hundred and fifty thousand dollars? Maybe the state can get its money back. The [logo's] gradient is too distracting and the proportions are uneven (Triangulator, Dec. 9).
