The Simplicity of Sustainable Sleep
What lasts, what does not, and why. There is a particular kind of disappointment that comes from doing the right thing badly. You set out to buy something better, you pay more for it, you feel briefly virtuous, and four years later it sags in the middle and goes to the curb anyway. Bedding is a good example, partly because the labels are confusing and partly because almost nobody talks about durability. We talk a great deal about materials and hardly at all about how long the thing survives.

Real‑time AI engine poised to revolutionize large‑scale imaging data at national labs
As advanced discovery tools flood U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories with data, scientists are facing a critical challenge: Humans can’t keep up with the sheer volume and speed of information being generated. Modern X‑ray, microscopy and neutron facilities produce vast streams of high‑value imagery, yet tools to interpret this data at scale have not kept pace. Researchers are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to rapidly turn these massive datasets into usable insight.

Counting Race: How the Census Measures Identity and What Americans Think About It
November 3, 2025 From the very first census in 1790, the United States has measured race – but rarely in the same way or without controversy. Categories such as “free white males,” “free white females,” “all other free persons” and “slaves” were included that year, reflecting the young nation’s politics and social hierarchies. As politics, policy, migration and attitudes about racial identity changed over time, so did the categories used in later counts.

5 Facts About Hispanic Americans and Health Care
Hispanic Americans have long faced health care challenges in the United States, including lower health insurance rates and less access to preventative care. Language and cultural barriers, as well as higher levels of poverty, are among the social and economic factors contributing to disparate health outcomes for Hispanic Americans. These disparities were apparent during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, when Hispanics were far more likely than White Americans to have died from the virus.
Letter: Support local small farms
As a Clark County small farmer, I emphasize our community’s reliance on small farms for local produce, jobs and preserving rural charm. However, these farms face financial hardships, making diversifying income through farm weddings essential for survival. Small farms are currently disadvantaged compared to wineries in obtaining permits for hosting weddings. This unfair process contradicts the equal opportunity principle and hampers small-farm sustainability.

State of nation
By the time this column comes out, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. would have delivered his very first State of the Nation Address (SoNA). I would guarantee its eloquence, but like the rest of the citizenry, I would be very much interested in what his administration will really do or come up with in his first 100 days in office. Because there is so much to address.
Behind bars
Maria Ressa once again is on attack mode, this time trying to make noise on the Court of Appeals decision to uphold the cyber libel conviction rendered by Judge Rainelda Estacio-Montesa of the Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 46. Because of this, her arrest is imminent, and she should already be spending time behind bars.
The performance of Leni Robredo

Quid est veritas?
A disgruntled media practitioner, whose Nobel Prize severely diminished and intrinsically devalued this award, recently posed the following question in a forum somewhere in Europe: “Did Filipinos vote with free will? Or were they insidiously manipulated by social media?” Once again, this hack is trying vainly to rile up the international community to her side by creating the impression that media manipulation is controlling the narrative in our beloved country.
Lost cause
A Zoom Link invite was posted in one of the Viber groups where I am included, and it was an invite to a forum that will discuss “massive cheating” in the recent national elections.
Majority wins
Last Monday, we exercised our solemn and sacred duty as Filipinos to choose our next set of leaders. And based on the latest returns, it is very clear who we have chosen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. will be the 17th President of the Republic of the Philippines, and Sara Zimmerman Duterte-Carpio will be his vice president. As of Tuesday morning, with about 93 percent of votes counted, Bongbong Marcos got a staggering 29 million votes.
First salvo
Beginning today, am gonna be writing for the Daily Tribune, and my column will appear every Monday and Wednesday. What an auspicious time to be an opinion writer in mainstream, given that today is historic and shape-shifting. Today, we invoke our sacred right to choose our leaders for the next six years. This day will really be significant because it will be the culmination of what has become a most frenetic, albeit most toxic and definitely most engaging election season.
Key facts about the changing U.S. unauthorized immigrant population
For the latest estimates of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. click here. Border Patrol apprehensions of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border are on the rise again. For US Latinos, Identity Is Complex and Varied
The ways in which the nation’s sixty million Latinos (or Hispanics or Latinx) describe their identity varies widely across individuals, geographies, immigrant generations, ancestry, and much more. Yet the population is often referred to by a single, pan-ethnic term that implies it is a monolithic group. That masks much of the diversity that characterizes US Latinos. What is a pan-ethnic term?

Are small farms becoming extinct in Clark County?
Support small farms in every way possible; ask for local, in-season product to feed you and your family Over the past decade, the USDA Organic label has become more mainstream, yet small farms continue to disappear at an alarming rate. I’ve seen it firsthand. For two years, my family and I searched Clark County high and low for the perfect piece of property to become our new farm.
Hispanic Identity Fades Across Generations as Immigrant Connections Fall Away
More than 18% of Americans identify as Hispanic or Latino, the nation’s second largest racial or ethnic group. But two trends – a long-standing high intermarriage rate and a decade of declining Latin American immigration – are distancing some Americans with Hispanic ancestry from the life experiences of earlier generations, reducing the likelihood they call themselves Hispanic or Latino.
