Mark Madden’s Hot Take: In a cynical sports world, ‘Ted Lasso’ offers a welcome escape
“Ted Lasso” wrapped up Season 4 with everyone involved feeling good, including those watching. Remember when that’s how TV was supposed to be? It was far from the program’s best season. It’s unlikely “Ted Lasso” could ever approach its inaugural season, and hasn’t in the three since. Season 4 was a bit all over the place, with chaotic storylines. Properly reflecting, perhaps, life in minor-league women’s soccer: Having to deal with kids, side jobs, indifference, etc.

Mark Madden: Mike McCarthy can be trusted to make right decisions for Steelers
Mike McCarthy is the coach the Steelers need. One decision in Sunday’s game provided a microcosm. It was fourth-and-1 for the Steelers at Indianapolis’ 22. Midway through the fourth quarter. Steelers led, 24-22. That’s a spot where Mike Tomlin kicks a field goal, goes up by five and lets the defense win the game. Or, more likely, lose the game. The Steelers don’t have that kind of defense. The NFL isn’t that kind of league. Instead, McCarthy goes for it.

Mark Madden: Sidney Crosby deserves benefit of the doubt and more Penguins notes
Sidney Crosby has two assists in six games. He’s minus-4. He has three goals in 30 games dating back through last season. He’s 39. I’m nonetheless not worried. Until Crosby clearly hits the wall, I won’t believe it’s going to happen. Few have earned our faith like Crosby. Two caveats: • Crosby is a creature of habit, neurotically so. This season’s ultra-short training camp might have thrown him. • Perhaps he’s not 100% recovered from the knee injury that knocked him out of February’s Olympics.

Mark Madden’s Hot Take: Steelers are a team defined by chaos
One word best describes the Steelers: Chaos. It’s a flawed team that needs to “clean our own house,” as Mike McCarthy said. (I wonder if McCarthy knew what he was getting into, or if he was too eager to coach his hometown team.) Chaos. Let me count the ways: • Joey Porter Jr. faked injury to lie his way out of Pittsburgh. The Steelers validated his lie. It hijacked the season.
Mark Madden: Pittsburgh Spirit brought indoor soccer to life, gave fans a game unlike any other
Imagine soccer played inside a pinball machine. That’s indoor soccer. There’s a pro league kicking around now, but it’s second-rate. There’s not much of a market for the indoor game. There are too many superior outdoor options — like Major League Soccer and the United Soccer Leagues — for both players and spectators. But between 1984 and 1996, there was no big-time outdoor soccer in the U.S. The North American Soccer League folded in ‘84.

HOW PORTER WINS | 105.9 The X | Mark Madden
Here's how Joey Porter Jr. wins: Dallas franchises WR George Pickens, also a former Steeler. (The hypocycloid is a farm team for the star.) Once that happens, the Cowboys can't franchise Porter. Each team is permitted one tag per year. Porter's contract expires at season's end. Porter hits free agency at 26, in his prime. That rarely happens. Not at any position, let alone cornerback, let alone one of the NFL's top-10 cover corners. Porter will set the market at cornerback. He might get $35 million AAV.
Mark Madden: Chaos, frustration show Steelers have lost their identity
Starting 2-2 is no disaster. Losing at Cleveland for a fifth straight Thursday night stinks, but the Browns are 3-1 and might not be too bad. New England is defending AFC champion. Losing at Foxborough is no disgrace. The Steelers are hardly circling down the drain. Thirteen games to go. Still transitioning to a new coach. But it feels wrong. It looks bad. It’s chaotic. The Steelers have one emotion: Frustration. It’s all so tiresome. It kills the vibe. It’s hijacking the season.

Mark Madden’s Hot Take: Dennis Miller stood out in a sports TV world gone dumb
HBO MAX has a new documentary: “Miller Night Football.” It’s about Dennis Miller’s two years (2000-01) as color analyst on “Monday Night Football.” Aside from Howard Cosell’s reign of terror (1970-83) during MNF’s glory days, Miller’s tenure was the franchise’s high point. If you’re smart and creative, that is. Therein lied the problem. Miller, a Pittsburgh native and ex-commissioner of the air-hockey league at Point Park University, is a football fan. Not a football lifer.

THE McCARTHY EFFECT
Here's an excerpt from my latest TribLive.com column: Mike McCarthy scripts the Steelers’ first 15 first- and second-down plays. At New England, those 15 plays gained 53 yards. Against Cincinnati, those 15 plays gained 133 yards and scored a touchdown. That’s how you fix something. That’s McCarthy. A real coach. Not a TV analyst in masquerade. Mike Tomlin forces a rock fight and loses that game. To read more, click HERE.
