Web Exclusive One could be forgiven for focusing on the surface changes going on throughout Shannon Lay’s fifth studio album of original material, Past The Veil. Being released on her own newly formed label, All The Best, her departure from her long-term home, Sub Pop, may be the first thing one notices. If not that, the sonic palette for the album has expanded—a lot. Not that Lay’s music hadn’t already evolved in the last decade, but long gone is the finger-picked folkiness of 2017’s Living Water.

Web Exclusive Jenn Wasner has had her hands in a lot of pots. Aside from being one half of the duo Wye Oak, during Wasner’s formative musical years, she is a current member of Bon Iver. But her most personal work has been her solo project, Flock of Dimes. Head of Roses from 2021 was her last full-length album and it was a stunner. In part the album focused on the dissolution of a relationship, but unlike many breakup albums, Wasner was willing to turn the lens on herself.
