Desolation: A Heavy Metal Memoir
This Hardcover Edition of Mark Morton's Desolation: A Heavy Metal Memoir is autographed on a bookplate by Mark Morton. A gritty, revealing heavy metal memoir by Lamb of God’s guitarist and lyricist, which explores both his life in music and his tumultuous path through addiction and into recovery For a band as extreme as Lamb of God, mainstream success and touring the world to massive audiences was an almost surreal achievement.
DESOLATION | Kirkus Reviews
The Lamb of God co-founder and guitarist recalls his life in heavy metal, nearly undone by addiction. Morton (b. 1972) recalls a relatively well-adjusted upbringing in Williamsburg, Virginia. Still, he had insecurities about his weight and making friends, which drew him to alcohol and marijuana as a teen. Music provided a healthier outlet for his anxieties, and he quickly found a home in Virginia’s punk, hard rock, and metal scenes.
The Headmasters — The St. Louis Literary Review

When Actions Are Words
It’s that time of the year, so let’s talk turkey about the act of giving thanks. At first glance there’s nothing very remarkable about thanking someone—expressions of gratitude are ubiquitous and so casually tossed around in our everyday social interactions that you wouldn’t be blamed for thinking that giving thanks has lost all meaning and purpose.

Get the Word of the Day - hypocorism | Dictionary.com
The very rare English noun hypocorism comes from the equally rare Latin noun hypocorisma “a diminutive (word),” a direct borrowing of Greek hypokórisma “pet name, endearing name; diminutive (word),” a derivative of the verb hypokorízesthai “to play the child, call by an endearing name.” Hypokorízesthai is a compound formed from the prefix hypo-, here meaning “slightly, somewhat,” and korízesthai “to caress, fondle.” The root of korízesthai is the noun kórē “girl, maiden” or kóros “boy,...
‘Captain America: Civil War’ composer Henry Jackman revives Teutonic tone poems
Like it or not, superhero movies are Hollywood’s current bread and butter. With release schedules confirmed through 2020, movie studios are banking on audiences continued interest in seeing their favorite comic book characters make the leap to the silver screen.
Soundtrack interview: Jason Graves unleashes the beast in ‘Far Cry Primal’
Video game music composing is an ever-expanding art. While it has taken American critics quite some time to come around to that realization, gamers and soundtrack music fans around the globe have been welcoming and honoring game scores as the art form they are. Jason Graves is one such a composer whose video game music rivals a lot of modern film music in terms of theming, character-depth, immersion, and listenability.

Soundtrack review: Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL rage in ‘Batman V Superman’
Few composers in the modern film-scoring industry are as polarizing as Hans Zimmer. To many, he is revered as the Bishop of Bombast, willfully ignoring trend and tradition and innovating at every opportunity.
Soundtrack interview: John Debney finds inspiration with ‘The Young Messiah’
It is rare for a composer to create a soundtrack that breaks through the mainstream, instantly becoming a favorite release among music fans. It is rarer that the soundtrack is nominated for an Academy Award and attains iconic status to the point of being performed live. However, it is rarest of all that the composer receives an opportunity to revisit that innovative collection of sounds to create a brand new score for another film. John Debney is the recipient of that experience.
Composer interview: Tim Wynn brings humanity to alien-infested ‘XCOM 2’
Video games that pit intergalactic military forces against hostile aliens are a dime a dozen. 2K Games, however, asks a rarely explored question with the latest entry in the “XCOM” PC game series: What if the aliens won? “XCOM 2” begins in the aftermath of “Enemy Within,” with humans defeated, banding together in small rebel squads, determined to save mankind from extinction at the hands of the ever-increasing alien hordes.

Lamb of God Interview: Mark Morton Talks GRAMMY Nom, Touring After Paris Attacks
Lamb of God scored their fifth GRAMMY nomination since 2007 earlier this week, as their single "512" earned a Best Metal Performance nod. The song—hands down one of the 20 best of 2015—was started by frontman Randy Blythe as he waited in a Czech prison cell to be tried for the death of a fan at a concert two years earlier. He was acquitted, and the tune became an emotional, devastatingly heavy centerpiece of the Virginia stalwarts’ VII: Sturm Und Drang.
