Arran Whisky’s Euan Mitchell on where does Scottish whisky go next
Do you think the Scottish whisky industry is in something of a ‘perfect storm’ at the moment? Yeah, I think that's a good description. I mean it's important to note that Scotch whisky has been on a long run of success. I was looking at single malt export figures back in 2000, which were 4 million 9 litre cases, reaching a peak in 2022 of 14m which averages out at a pretty healthy 6% growth a year. However, since then it has dropped back to about 9m which is a fall of around 37%.

Brussels Sprouts Live: NATO in the American Heartland
NATO marked its 75th anniversary this year – a testament to the strength and continued relevance of the alliance. Celebrations have been muted however, due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and increasing concerns from Europe about US commitments to transatlantic security. The role of NATO is as crucial now as it was 75 years ago but the security threats the alliance faces are evolving, and growing in complexity.

Two LEGENDARY street food cultures meet head on as Bundobust give the Desi treatment to Mexican classics, while Bundo favourites like Chaat and Poha get a little Latino heat. Fresh from celebrating their 10th anniversary in Leeds last month; Bundobust recreated fan-favourite specials from over the years and thanked longstanding customers and supporters with a free special edition comic and a weekend long party.
Our Environment: Why are Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, among others, so bullish on developing nuclear fusion as a power source?
While nuclear fission is commonly used in nuclear power plants across the globe, nuclear fusion is a lesser-known process. Whereas fission is the process of releasing energy by splitting atoms apart, fusion is the opposite. During nuclear fusion light nuclei collide with each other to form heavier nuclei, a process that releases large amounts of energy. To produce fusion, it requires a combination of the hydrogen gasses deuterium and tritium, which are heated to over 100 million degrees celsius.

Sustainability By Mark Newton, Head of Corporate Sustainability, Samsung Electronics America ENERGY STAR Day is a moment when we reflect on the importance of energy efficiency and the role innovation can play in it. As a known leader in technology who strives to consider sustainability in all aspects of our business, we are committed to doing our part while helping consumers use our products to thrive responsibly.
Precious metals break out along with Ethereum
The minor stalling out in US Equity indices after four straight days of gains doesn’t equate to any sort of market top, technically speaking, and near-term patterns remain bullish for the prospect of further gains back above 4133 in the days ahead. As mentioned previously, the entire bearish argument for investors doubting Technology’s rally depends on SPX holding under 4200 and QQQ remaining under $326.
Samsung and ENERGY STAR: Creating an Everyday Sustainable Customer Journey
By Mark Newton, Head of Corporate Sustainability, Samsung Electronics America At Samsung, sustainability is at the core of all we do. This year, our commitment to reducing our environmental footprint and preserving the planet for future generations is once again being celebrated by the EPA and ENERGY STAR. In Our Opinion: Certifications serve all of us
Responding to recent criticism of certifications generally, e-Stewards leadership argues standards have evolved to be more user friendly and are prepared to address a rapidly changing industry. | sasirin pamai/Shutterstock Bob Akers’s op-ed in E-Scrap News raised the question: “How valuable are the standards and certifications in our industry today?” To answer, let’s first take a quick trip into the time machine.
The Excitement of Post-COVID Marketing | By Mark Newton – Hospitality Net
I am reminded every time I go to my almost empty gym that membership is down 70 percent due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I wonder with the exciting news of a vaccine and hope of eventually getting back to "normal," are small businesses like my gym ready to enter an entirely new scenario? The economy has undergone a horrible decline in business during the past year and there is no training manual showing small businesses how to react once the virus is in the rear-view mirror.
Data Integrity Metrics for Chromatography
Key performance indicators (KPIs) or metrics are used by many laboratories to measure the operational and quality performance of processes and the laboratory itself: If you can’t measure it, you can’t control or manage it. Metrics are also a requirement of the ISO 9001 quality standard and six sigma initiatives for continuous improvement of processes.
Terroir in Whisky? Proven, At Last
French winemakers have recognized the importance of terroir for millennia and they’ve enshrined it in law. Yet for some reason, the whisky industry considers the concept of terroir heretical. Terroir is the three-dimensional impact of soil, microclimate, and topography on the growth of a plant. In the case of malt whisky, that plant is barley, the very source of whisky’s flavor complexity. For much of the whisky industry, barley is a commodity, cultivated for consistency and efficiency.
The Question of Chromatographic Integration in Data Integrity
The topic of chromatographic integration and data interpretation raises a lot of questions about data integrity. Is it acceptable to integrate data? What are the limits? We asked Mark E. Newton, of Heartland QA, in Lebanon, Indiana, to weigh in. It’s interesting. I would say manual integration is acceptable. So long as you make a provision in your process that says when I do manual integration, I recognize there is risk here and therefore commensurate to that risk there is an additional set of review.

Data Integrity in the Chromatography Laboratory, Part VI: Open Culture, Training, and Monitoring Metrics
This is the last of six articles on data integrity in a regulated chromatography laboratory. The first article introduced a four-layer data integrity model and then discussed sampling and sample preparation (1), the second focused on preparing the instrument for analysis and acquiring data (2) and the third discussed integration of acquired chromatograms (3). Article four discussed calculation of the reportable result (4) and the fifth one presented second-person review (5).
Opinion: The world needs more anesthesiologists. Here's why.
Five billion of the world’s 7 billion people lack access to safe surgery. In many parts of the world, the limiting factor is often the lack of trained anesthesia providers. Half of the countries in the world fall short of the World Federation Of Societies of Anesthesiologists’ recommended short-term goal of five anesthesiologists per 100,000 people — shockingly, some countries with millions of citizens report zero anesthesiologists.
Data Integrity in the Chromatography Laboratory, Part V: Second-Person Review
The fifth article in this series discusses the second-person review process for regulated records and the risks to be addressed, such as reviewing all data in the run, including aborted or rejected data. The added review costs (and time) of hybrid records and paper logbooks are illustrated. Common failure modes for review are identified. Finally, some management behaviors that compound an already complex step are described along with their consequences.
How to build the finance function of the future
Leaders who embrace the right technology are better equipped to anticipate and predict what comes next, argues Oracle’s Mark Newton. The vision and role of finance is expanding. Today, it’s not enough for CFOs to be the co-pilot. Finance leaders must also be the change agent of the organization—innovating today, predicting tomorrow, and shaping the future. Imagine you’re a CFO on a morning run, listening to your favourite podcast on your phone.
Five Objectives for the 2018 NATO Summit (excerpt)
More Than Burden Sharing: Five Objectives for the 2018 NATO Summit (excerpt) Mark Newton et al believe that US President Donald Trump will arrive at the July 2018 NATO summit with only one thing on his mind: burden sharing. However, given the implications of events in Salisbury and Syria for NATO’s policy towards Russia, our authors contend that the summit cannot just look at spending.
Data Integrity in the GXP Chromatography Laboratory, Part IV: Calculation of the Reportable Results
4. After initial calculation, changes made to factors, dilutions, and weights used in calculation must be preserved in an audit trail. 5. All factors and values used in the calculation must be traceable from the original observations or other source data to the reportable result. No matter where calculations happen, it must be possible to see the original data, the original calculation procedure (method), and the outcome.
More Than Burden Sharing
In early-July, NATO will host the first full-length summit at its new headquarters in Brussels. It will also be the first NATO summit for President Donald Trump’s foreign-policy team. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has laid out the following goals for the summit: to further strengthen the transatlantic bond, to build on NATO’s work with partner nations to fight terrorism, to strengthen NATO’s Black Sea presence, and to step up efforts against cyberattacks and hybrid threats.
Data Integrity in the GxP Chromatography Laboratory, Part III: Integration and Interpretation of Data
This is the third of six articles on data integrity in a regulated chromatography laboratory. The first article discussed sampling and sample preparation (1), and the second looked at preparing the instrument for analysis and acquiring data (2). Now we focus our attention on the integration of the chromatographic data files that we acquired in the last article. Figure 1 shows what will be covered in this article. Figure 1: Scope and order of chromatographic integration.
Data Integrity in the GxP Chromatography Laboratory, Part II: Setting up a Chromatograph and Acquiring Data
Correct, complete, and accurate data acquisition is a key component of data integrity. Here we look at how this component should be applied to a chromatograph and a chromatography data system (CDS). In this article, we discuss how to ensure the correct setup of an instrument, run system suitability test samples, and acquire data. In the first article in this series (1), we covered the sampling and sample preparation phases of analysis and the vials ready for analysis.

Data Integrity in the GxP Chromatography Laboratory, Part I: Sampling and Sample Preparation
Data Integrity Articles The scope of this series of six articles is shown in Figure 3 and explained in more detail below: 1. Sampling and sample preparation: Two of the most critical areas in analysis that are mostly manual and could be easily manipulated. 2. Setting up a chromatograph and acquiring data: What should be done to ensure the correct set up of an instrument, how to run system suitability test samples, and the acquisition of data. 3.
Meet Valerie Bertrand: SmartRecruiters’ Rock-Loving Head of Legal
Lawyers are often thought of as terrifying, stern, bespectacled types. SmartRecruiters’ Valerie Bertrand proves you can know your legal jargon and how to have a good time. If you work for a company that conducts any business in or with Europe you’ve no doubt heard a certain acronym thrown around the office with increasing frequency, and intensity: GDPR. If you haven’t, you might want to start shouting it yourself, because avoiding the General Data Protection Regulation could prove very expensive.

Everything You Need To Know About Eurovision 2017
What am I describing? It regularly brings in twice as many viewers as the Super Bowl each year, and is even a contender for the most watched television show on Earth. It usually features around 40 countries, but America is not one of them. It is also one of the cheesiest things on the planet. If you answered "Eurovision," then give yourself a croissant and a pat on the back.
After 'Kong: Skull Island', How Are Kong and Godzilla Going To Fight?
This article contains Kong: Skull Island spoilers both of a small yield tactical variety and of the strategic thermo-nuclear 57 mega-ton world-ending variety. Approach with caution. Now we've all seen the super-sized simian sultan of Skull Island swat seventies Hueys out the sky to the tune of Black Sabbath's 'Paranoid', two obvious questions beg themselves to be answered: When will King Kong have a titanic tussle with Godzilla and how can that even happen?

'Children of Men' 10 Year Anniversary: Why Cuarón's Dystopian Masterpiece Is Even More Relevant Today
A quick perusal of social media or pop culture at the end of 2016 tends to reveal one overarching reaction: 2016 was kind of terrible - an 'annus horribilis' for all those fans of slightly rude sounding Latin out there. Why was it so terrible? Well, take your pick. Perhaps you're still reeling over the death of Bowie? Perhaps you're incandescent with rage regarding the election of Trump? Perhaps you're currently trying to escape Aleppo? Perhaps you're Johnny Depp?

'Ain't War Hell?' The Evolution Of The War Movie
War and storytelling have been intimately associated since the dawn of violence and language. For example, we only need to look at the oldest book in the Western world, The Iliad, to see the tight and intimate connection between fiction and large-scale warfare. Indeed, this story, which tells of one hero's epic adventures during the Trojan War, is in many ways the beginning of a long line of stories that culminate in the modern war film.
A War Without End: Why Cinema Is Continually Drawn To World War II
It is almost impossible to fully tally the number of films that are based on the largest war ever fought. Despite this, it's certainly clear their ranks far outstrip the nearest so-called competition. For example, it is estimated there are 10 World War II movies for every movie set in the trenches of World War I, with around 300 being produced during the war alone.
