Army bomb disposal team swarm Dublin street as 'suspiscious device' found
An Army bomb disposal unit was called to a street in a Dublin suburb on Tuesday following a report of a suspicious device. A device was reportedly found at Bow Lane in Kilmainham, with police called to the scene at around 3pm on August 25. Upon arriving to the area, Irish police set up a cordon, and called the Defence Forces for assistance. The discovery in the St James, Dublin 8 area and the cordon that followed prompted heavy traffic due to roads closure in place.

So doctors don’t deserve payment for services?
The CT Mirror ran a story on April 17 under this headline: “In CT, doctors now sue patients most over medical bills, surpassing hospitals.” It said this, in part: Lawsuits by doctors and other non-hospital providers now dominate health care collections in Connecticut … The lawsuits are typically over bills of less than $3,000, but the impact on patients can be devastating … Lawsuits can lead to garnished wages, liens on homes, and hundreds of dollars of added debt from interest and court fees.

Ireland v Czechia: Mark Lawrenson identifies two key areas where Boys in Green can come out on top
1 hour ago The Irish rap group faced controversy after aligning its cause for a unified Ireland with its support for Palestine. On its new album, Fenian, it’s taking the fight to another level. Móglaí Bap takes a sip of his beer and then lays an Irish-history lesson on me. He’s calling over Zoom from a pub in …
Celerywear
I don’t know why, but it seems as if many of the ads that show up in the games I play on my iPhone have to do with clothing made from bamboo. Underwear seems to be particularly popular for some reason — and sexy, if the ads are to be believed. I don’t know if I buy those ads. And I certainly don’t buy the underwear. But all of this got me thinking … and exploring. Bamboo, it turns out, is the largest member of the grass family. I know they make skirts from grass in Hawaii for luaus and such.
I’m Batman: Part Five
From early 2000 to early 2004, I worked for an advertising agency in Avon, Connecticut. As you may have surmised from some of my earlier writings, my office was full of all manner of Batman stuff, including a neon Batman clock on the wall. There was a young, brilliantly talented graphic designer on the Creative Department staff at the agency. Her name was Jennifer McKenzie. She was largely overlooked and woefully underappreciated. And she had at least one tattoo of which I was aware.
Right on the Bismarck
Here’s a highly unofficial and utterly arbitrary pop quiz: The photograph above is: A licensed furbearer trapper’s cabin in Bismarck, North Dakota? The home of our unlicensed neighbors across the street in Middletown, Connecticut, after two feet of climate change fell? But before we get to the answer, a little history: Bismarck, North Dakota, was named after the German battleship, Bismarck, which was named after Otto von Bismarck, the former Chancellor of the German Empire.
A Love Letter
I’m not generally one to dispense advice, but I’m going to break character and offer four pieces here: If you’re taking your trash cans down a steep icy driveway, don’t let your feet fly out from underneath you, causing you to elevate horizontally and to whack the back of your noggin on the pavement when gravity takes over.
Housework And Numerology
The other morning, I was at the kitchen sink making coffee when Anne came into the room, opened the cabinet underneath the sink, and pulled out a bottle of Formula 409. The first thing I wondered was where the name came from. So, I looked it up. It’s an interesting story with which some liberties have been taken. Because I tend to favor even numbers over odd, I decided to look up the numerological significance of 409. That compelled me to look up the numerological significance of 408 and 410.
It’s Only Syllables
If you’re a language snob like me, you pay attention to things other people don’t notice — or disregard if they do notice. I’ll cite a couple instances in a moment.
Irishman leads extreme row across Atlantic race in epic 4,200km challenge
5 hours ago With sea levels rising and warmer oceans fuelling more powerful waves, France is preparing to lose 500,000 hectares of coastline by 2100. People in one coastal community in the south-west tell RFI why they're sacrificing some structures to the advancing sea. Winter is storm season in Labenne, a …
Luke Plapp was thrown under the bus after Jayco's Road Nats error
So let's talk about the men's road race at Australian Road Nationals last weekend that proved to be so controversial. The biggest shame of it all is that the world cycling media is talking about how Jayco AlUla messed it up, meanwhile nobody is giving due credit to Team Brennan - a small local Continental team with incredibly talented cyclists, from gold medalists (Oliver Bleddyn, and Conor Leahy) to WorldTour riders (Patrick Eddy, formerly at Picnic-PostNL).
Woody’s Wonderful World
If you’ve never read anything I’ve written about my baby brother, Woody, here are a few things you should know: He loves animals. They love him (like Eddie and Sammy). He loves music. He particularly loves Christmas music. He loves Elvis Presley. He loves to sing. One year at Christmastime, my sister, Lynn, and her daughter, Johanna, had flown up from Virginia to visit my parents in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Woody was also visiting my parents at the time.

How The Nigerian Prince (Almost) Stole Christmas
‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, The Nigerian Prince was as mum as a mouse. “They know me,” he thought, “as the Master of Sham.
Happy New Year
As this year was coming to its inevitable close, I found myself feeling more contemplative. Because I wasn’t sure why, I posed a number of questions to myself, each of which I was able to answer without taxing myself unduly. Here are some of them: Question: Do you think you’re becoming more reflective as you get older? Answer: That can’t be it because I’m getting younger. Question: Do you think it’s because you’re acquiring more wisdom? Answer: You don’t know yourself very well, do you?
A 360 Christmas
‘Twas four days after Christmas at BIZCATALYST. Most things still looked normal, but there was a twist: Santa had skipped over Dennis and Ali. They somehow got left off his Christmas gift tally. So, Santa sent word out to 360 Nation To ask for some help with his miscalculation. And what to his wondering eyes should appear But outpourings of goodwill from far and from near. Yes, all they’ve paid forward came happily back To make sure there’s no joy for which they might lack.
Cubism
An article popped into my feed from History the other day. The headline grabbed me immediately: “Why the Inventor of the Cubicle Came to Despise His Own Creation”. If you’ve ever worked in a cubicle, as did I, that headline may have restored a little of your faith, as it did mine. My faith was bolstered still more when I read the first paragraph: How do you envision corporate hell? It probably involves fluorescent light, a micromanaging boss and a tiny, impersonal cubicle.
The Toughest Angel
My friend, Rick, and I had our families at roughly the same time. His daughters are about the same ages as my sons. When the kids were small, Rick called their efforts to test their boundaries running for daylight, an expression used to describe what running backs do in football. I never forgot his characterization. Fast forward to 2006. My younger son, Quinn, was 20 years old, a sophomore at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island, and living in an apartment off campus.
The Real Thanksgiving
Author’s Note: On Tuesday, December 2nd, I published a sarcastic, facetious post on my Substack account about a gluten-free Thanksgiving dinner. It may prove the adage, “Just because you can do something, that doesn’t mean you should.” The truth is we had a close shave. But the person who would have insisted the clan adhere to gluten-freedom declined our invitation. Thanksgiving, indeed. The real story of our Thanksgiving is told here. It’s everything Thanksgiving should be.
The Great Cologuard Scam: Part Four
Those of you with total recall may recall The Great Cologuard Scam Parts One, Two, and Three. If so, you were probably praying to everything good and holy that there wouldn’t be a Part Four. Well, I hate to disappoint you, but … You may remember two things in particular from Part One: My surgical history that stymied an earlier effort to perform a colonoscopy on me. The fact that I’d caved and submitted the Cologuard kit my PCP hadn’t sent to me. There.
Hot Air
I don’t know what things are like in the rest of the world or the rest of the United States for that matter. But in the Northeast part of the United States, at least in Connecticut, climate change seems to be producing more wind. I don’t mean there are higher speeds or higher velocities to the wind. It just seems like there’s more of it. I happened to notice this phenomenon while I was staring out the window above our kitchen sink the other afternoon waiting for some coffee to brew.
It’s No Joke
Candor compels me to admit I laugh at my own jokes. And few things make me laugh harder than when I tell a joke and nothing happens. I’ll give you two examples. In 1978, I had a job selling clothes for a now-defunct retail outlet in Westfarms, a mall on the West Hartford–Farmington town line in Connecticut. During a break, I went to a concession that sold bagels. I ordered one toasted, with cream cheese.
The Yam Cam
The other day, I saw an excerpt from some self-book or other telling me it’s never too late to change — attitudes, convictions, hairstyles, even careers. So, since I love true-crime books, documentaries, and TV programs so much, I’m going to change careers and become a private detective. Plus, I have an idea for the perfect sleuthing tool. More on that shortly. But first, this: A Botanical Interlude Most people think yams and sweet potatoes are the same.
Gallagher Re's Morley and O'Brien: For APAC insurers, quality and resilience are the watchwords
Insurance markets in Asia Pacific are contending with an economic backdrop that looks more challenging than it has done for several years, say Gallagher Re’s Mark Morley and Mark O’Brien. Premium growth has decelerated in the APAC region amid intensifying competition and other challenges. In this environment, the quality of business has become a key differentiator for resilience.
The Great Pumpkin Rumor
Rumors, as we know, in part due to the inscrutable vagaries of human nature, are wont to take on lives of their own. As they circulate, accruing gravity and credibility, they’re accepted, taken for granted, and finally accepted as truth. And so it is that, in a series of ever-widening circles, it was alleged — nay, believed, taken to heart and as gospel — that I didn’t know my way around a jack-o’-lantern. Pshaw! The bigger they are, the harder they fall pertains to rumors, too.
The Things We Do For Love
In a recent edition of The Chronicle, a weekly newspaper covering the city of Middletown, in which we live, I happened to see this headline: “Latin Band to Play at Wadsworth Mansion.” The very notion struck me as so brilliant, I couldn’t believe I’d never thought of it. I’d imagine the trick is to play songs, the melodies of which are familiar to almost everyone. Then people can follow along in Latin and begin to understand that language.
Lucky Clucks
While playing a word game on my iPhone the other day, I had an idea prompted by some of the things people have been creating using AI. So, I searched for an answer to this question: “Can I use Claude to create an app for a slot machine game?” The first response was, “Claude who?
The Presumption Of Virtue
On Thursday, September 18th, I participated in Grappling with the Gray with Naya Lekht, Kimberly Davis, and our host, Yonason Goldson. At one point, after 20 minutes or so of sharing thoughts, Kimberly said: We’re going, “We’re the virtuous ones”. But other people think they’re the virtuous ones. So, who’s right? What’s truth? She’s correct, of course.
Good And Evil
Because, as I said on a recent Friendship Bench, I have a head full of disjointed nonsense, it occurred to me the other day that good and evil are four-letter words. And because I’m utterly untroubled by that disjointed nonsense, I opted to explore whatever meaning there might be in my observation about good, evil, and the number four. As it turns out, the fact that they’re both four-letter words can be seen as a numerological reflection of their balanced and complementary nature.
The Gift Of Disappointment
The title of this post is a phrase borrowed (okay, stolen) from Andy Vargo, who shared it in a discussion he led on the Friendship Bench recently. The gist of Andy’s thinking is that disappointment teaches us resilience, revealing our capacity to adapt and grow through setbacks. It can sharpen our self-awareness, forcing us to confront our expectations and align them with reality.
The Forest For The Trees
Anne and I have made the momentous decision to invest our life savings in a new venture. We’ve bought 137 acres of prime real estate in Oregon on which we’re going to plant plywood trees. When we got the email pitch, Anne was concerned it might be from the Nigerian Prince. But when I asked him where the New York Yankees, the New York Mets, the New York Giants, and the New York Jets play their games, he gave me all the right answers. So, I convinced Anne he was legit.
Smart Pills
I don’t know if it’s just me, but I seem to be targeted for ads about supplements and substances claiming to enhance brain function. Here’s the short list of stuff that’s been coming my way of late: Ginkgo Biloba improves memory and mental sharpness. In China, it’s been used for centuries to treat diarrhea, cough, and other conditions. Those things may be related. Bacopa Monnieri improves memory, learning, and cognitive processing speed by enhancing synaptic communication.
I See Your Pain
In a recent conversation with my friend, Maribel Cardez, she introduced me to the term, logical empathy. “Well,” I thought, “at the intersection of intellect and emotion, there’s bound to be some uncertainty, if not volatility, no?” I had to look it up, of course.
What You See Is What You Get
As regular readers of this column likely know, Grandpa O’Brien was an inveterate storyteller. And while my father wasn’t quite the storyteller his father was, Dad (his name was Ned) would talk to anyone, anywhere. Depending on your perspective, I seem to have inherited the best — or the worst — from both of them. Were you to ask my older sister, Lynn, she’d likely say it’s the worst.

The Sounds Of Silence
It’s been a while since I wrote about our moving adventure. That was 2022. We’re now well settled and very happy … most of the time. For most days during the summer, we have the windows closed and the central air on to keep us from the sweltering heat and the stifling humidity. But in the late spring and early fall when the air is cool and dry, we keep the windows open.
