1 Background and Justification Permafrost-affected soils can be found in a wide variety of ecosystems including forests, shrublands, grasslands, and wetlands [1] and encompass an enormous diversity of soil types with varying physicochemical properties, landscape-level features, and permafrost disturbance history.

1 INTRODUCTION Northern peatlands cover 3.7 ± 0.5 million km2 and store large amounts of carbon (C), with recent estimates of 415 ± 150 Pg C or approximately 80% of the global peatland C stocks (Hugelius et al., 2020). Nearly half of these northern peatlands contain surface permafrost, which is susceptible to degradation and thaw as soils warm under a changing climate (Loisel et al., 2020).
