I still love the idea of 'ambient information'

Some years ago my son was working at London's Madame Tussaud's. The daily commute to his long hot summer student job was regularly disrupted by industrial action on the underground. One day he said to me - "wouldn't it be great if there was like, a thing you could have that would tell you every morning whether the tube is running." That made me think about an old concept that fascinates me called ambient information. It's best explained by thinking about a clock you have in a room.
