Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Do I count the high school newspaper? Freelancing for Ohio's Stow Sentry? Or business desk clerk at the Akron Beacon Journal? Exciting times!

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Not only have I used a typewriter, but it was at the top of my wish list one childhood Christmas. (Thanks Grandma!)

How is social media changing news?

If news is covering history as it happens, we'll have a treasure trove of blogs, tweets and photos for future historians and documentaries.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Lou Grant and his team.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

The ability to share with readers what is happening and, more importantly, why it's happening.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email is my favorite, at least for now.

Who do you wish followed you?

Any of my loyal readers who are not yet following me.

Why did you become a journalist?

It was destiny. I grew up reading the Wall Street Journal and the Cleveland Press every day after school. Cheers, Dick Feagler!

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Of course. Lots of writing. I recall having a lot of fun working with great classmates and Berea High School teacher Keith Lare.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

My modest role in the Akron Beacon Journal's coverage of the attempted takeover of Goodyear, which won a 1987 Pulitzer for the paper's staff.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Pursue your career in journalism with passion and enthusiasm or opt for another career.
