Brother honors La Jolla man killed in Sept. 11 attacks through new book
Twenty-five years after the September 11th attacks, much of the focus remains on the 2,977 people who were killed. But far harder to measure is the lasting impact on the parents, spouses, children and siblings they left behind. For Craig Woodall, that loss was his older brother Brent, a La Jolla High School and UC Berkeley standout athlete who was working on the 89th floor of the South Tower when it was attacked. Our world is now made up of EUUSJACKs & CRINKs
People talk about all the bad things going on as if that itself is its own topic. Even as a conversation starter, people are unsure which to lead with, Israel/Palestine, Russia/Ukraine, Armenia/Azerbaijan, the list goes on. There is even a new term for it, "polycrisis" which is an erudite way to say, "Wow, there's alot of scary stuff going on right now!" In times of uncertainty, always good to look back at history.
What happened when my company moved to a four-day workweek - The Washington Post
Comment on this story Comment Mark Mullen is the chief executive of Atom, a U.K.-based bank. Coming out of covid, the digital start-up bank where I’m chief executive needed re-energizing. Lockdowns had been hard for everyone. Strong demand for technology workers as the economy bounced back also threatened to deprive us of some of our best people. So we switched to a four-day week. Atom bank is a nine-year-old digital retail bank based in the north of England.

Navy SEAL Selection Course Under Investigation After Sailor’s Death
There’s no doubt the Navy SEALs have been a point of pride for the U.S. Navy and our local community. After all, the elite military operators train and live in San Diego County. The SEALs have been involved in some of the most high-profile missions, like the capture of Osama Bin Laden, and hundreds of even more dangerous classified operations we’ll never hear about. It’s no wonder that it’s a rare honor to join their elite ranks, which few can.

A 13-year-old San Diego boy named Sean already had enough challenges, suffering from an intellectual disability compounded by years of neglect, but when he was removed from his home for his own safety, he entered a well-intentioned foster-care system that can still be daunting for any young person to navigate. “When I first entered, I was scared," Sean told NBC 7. "I didn’t know anyone and didn’t know if someone would be there to protect me." To be sure, there are some wonderful foster families.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta Says Encinitas Dodged Housing Laws by Striking Down 277-Unit Project
California Attorney General Rob Bonta said Thursday that the city of Encinitas should have approved a permit for a 277-unit housing development and that he will "promptly act to hold the city accountable" if it does not approve a modified version of the project proposal. In a statement, Bonta's office said the city's denial last year of the Encinitas Boulevard Apartments blocked the state's efforts "to increase housing affordability and accessibility" in the city.

Op-Ed: Former Federal Prosecutor Details Resignation Over AG Barr’s Antics
For more than three decades, San Diego-based federal prosecutor Phil Halpern stayed away from politics and the public eye, unless, of course, it was to answer press questions following the successful conviction of a high profile defendant like former Congressman Duncan D. Hunter (R-CA). But this week, the Ronald Reagan-era appointee announced he was frustrated, disgusted and resigning, and he wrote about why in an op-ed in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

La Mesa Man at Center of Controversial Arrest Waiting for Answers
It's been almost two months since Amaurie Johnson, 23, was arrested by La Mesa police while waiting for a friend near a bus stop. His recorded arrest spread on social media and helped mobilize thousands to turn out and protest racial profiling and heavy-handed policing. “That is indicative of the general African-American experience in America for the most part," Johnson told NBC 7 in an interview at the location where he was arrested. "You can be doing the right thing.

The Army Corps of Engineers (COE) has allocated more than $900,000 for the first stages of projects that will secure parts of the bluff line in northern San Diego County and San Clemente. Rep. Mike Levin (D-49) announced the funding days after he attended the State of the Union address alongside Dr. Pat Davis, an Encinitas doctor who was seated right next to three of his family members at Grandview Beach last summer when a portion of the bluff collapsed and killed them.
Widower of Church’s Chicken Shooting Victim Has Uncertain Future
Ramon Mendoza never could imagine he would be a widower less than a year after he got married, or that on top of grieving this horrible crime, it would also throw the Mexican college grad’s immigration status suddenly into limbo. Ramon’s wife Maribel Ibañez was the on-duty supervisor at the Church’s Chicken Restaurant in Otay Mesa on Nov. 6, 2019, when police say a customer tried to buy food with a counterfeit $100 bill and was refused.

'Herding Cats': Former Charger Drew Brees Shares What Its Like to Coach 3 Sons
On any NFL field, star quarterback Drew Brees is clearly in command; he can diagnose defenses, audibly change plays at the line of scrimmage and mobilize his players to where he needs them to be. Trying to coach the flag football teams of his 5-, 7- and 9-year-old sons is a different matter. "It’s like herding cats sometimes," Brees laughs.

On The Radarami Project - Odessa Review
An American long active in Georgia writes about his organization, which is dedicated to connecting the small Georgian nation to big ideas around the world. Nations change, transform, are subsumed, and reemerge. As they do this to themselves and have it done to them in turn, the issue of identity stays topical. Who are they and what is their narrative? What distinguishes them from others? Particularly their past masters and close neighbors?
In Re: Hurricane Harvey, Inverse Condemnation And Potential Subrogation Actions
On August 25, 2017, Hurricane Harvey made landfall near Rockport, Texas as a Category 4 Atlantic hurricane. It then stalled over Houston. After landfall, winds diminished but precipitation did not, and over the next four days, the wettest tropical cyclone in the United States’ recorded history dropped an unprecedented amount of rain on Houston and environs.
The Supreme Court Gets “Specific” on Jurisdiction
For the second time in the last three years, the U.S. Supreme Court has addressed the constitutional limits of a court’s ability to exercise jurisdiction over a defendant. The 14th Amendment limits the personal jurisdiction of state and lower federal courts over nonresident defendants, i.e., any defendant not incorporated or having its principal place of business in the state. In 2016, we addressed in an Alert the impact of the Court’s decision in Daimler AG v.
21 Century Solutions Grant Winner: The NAMI App for Navigating through a Mental Health Crisis
With one in every four people affected in some way by mental illness either personally or through a family member in the U.S., it would be easy to assume there is vast, shared knowledge about mental illness. But that is not the case. Stigma and fear of judgment, even discrimination prompts many suffering from mental health problems along with their families to stay quiet while they desperately scramble for information and resources, not always knowing where to turn.
Unusual Prosecutions Carried Out in San Diego
When it comes to criminal cases, most prosecutors boast impressive conviction rates above 90 percent. That is because only cases that could be won are typically taken to trial and the rest, which result in plea bargains also count as a conviction on the stat sheet. The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office has a felony conviction rate of 94 percent. But the prosecutors in that office sometimes take on unusual prosecutions.

What Is Old Becomes New Again
It takes a LOOOONNNGG time for most of us who are not named BJ Penn to achieve a brown or black belt in BJJ. The techniques that we use naturally evolve as we gain an understanding of them. When you first start out, you concentrate on the basic techniques: those signature moves of BJJ that everyone knows – moves that you could very likely learn in your first BJJ class. The scissor sweeps, the Americana, the hip bump sweeps, and others fall in this category.
Voices for Children Volunteers Are Champions in the Eyes of Many
It’s not like Sue Bieker had ample free time. The San Diego employment law attorney maintained a law practice and was the mother of two children. But she knew she had a big heart for kids and that her son and daughter were now getting older. A nexus happened when she heard about a remarkable San Diego organization fueled by volunteers which profoundly improves the outcome of the county’s 5,000 children in the foster care system called Voices for Children. Help for these kids is desperately needed.
Foster Kid Rises to Becomes White House Adviser
Every kid in foster care has a story. But it would be challenging to find one that started with the severe level of abuse and exploitation that one San Diego young person survived and which transformed with a remarkable rise to adulthood, even being appointed by the president as a White House adviser. His name is Suamhirs and his childhood memories are horrific, camouflaged in an upper-middle-class family with a doctor as a father. “Behind closed doors, my father was a different man.
Foster Kids Plagued With Numerous Misconceptions, Still Thrive
The very question, if not articulated out loud, is a cutting perception which still confronts many of the 5,000 foster children in San Diego County. It’s bad enough that these children suffered in abusive and neglectful homes before entering the foster care system. But they also must endure the stigma which surrounds foster youth. Rosie Burton knows this well.
'Voices for Children' Advocates for Foster Kids, Changes Lives
Like so many children in his position, Anthony at the age of 11 wondered if he was somehow to blame when he says he started getting hurt at home. “I was abused by my father and that was really tough. I thought was this something that I did or is it my Dad’s fault?" he said.
