What was your first job as a journalist?

Beat journalist for the Features section at my college newspaper.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. It's a heck of a workout.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To notice what is unnoticed, to speak to those who have not been heard, and to write it all down clearly, compellingly, accurately.

What's your favorite social network?

Reddit. Subreddits are a decent way to find story threads.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Always write. No writing is ever wasted - write creatively, write broadly. If you're stuck, look out the window and write what you see.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

A 1000-word article on spring allergies for the rate of "exposure."

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Head hunched over a notebook, scribbling away.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

National Geographic.
