1 Introduction A reciprocal transfer of cells occurs between the mother and foetus during pregnancy giving rise to microchimerism. Foetal microchimerism refers to foetal cells in maternal circulation and tissues, while maternal microchimerism refers to maternal cells in foetal circulation and tissues. A subset of these cells persists for decades postpartum [1, 2] as different cell types in various tissues in the mother and offspring respectively [3].
