An Independent Voice for Alaska
Mary Peltola. Image-AFN Alaskans need a senator who only answers to Alaskans — not corporate greed and Lower 48 insiders. Our delegation used to stand up to D.C. people to put Alaska first. Ted Stevens and Don Young ignored Lower 48 partisanship to fight for things like public media and disaster relief because rural Alaska depends on them. There was a time when our delegation was known for being small but mighty, but those days feel long gone.

Mary Peltola's Rise: Alaska's Political Outsider
The New York Timesupdated 2m agofirst covered Sep 27, 6:15 AM ET Read the original ↗ Mary Peltola's journey to political prominence in Alaska reflects the unpredictable nature of modern politics and the power of grassroots movements to challenge establishment expectations. Her path has been unconventional and marked by obstacles that she's had to overcome to gain credibility with voters.
LGBTQ+ Senate Candidate Denies Using Anti-Gay Slur
Alaska Senate candidate Mary Peltola, who markets herself as a pro-LGBTQ+ champion, faces allegations that she used an anti-gay slur around staff members. Peltola's denial comes amid broader questions about whether progressive politicians genuinely support the communities they claim to champion or simply exploit identity politics for votes. The incident highlights the hypocrisy often found in woke politics, where public virtue-signaling masks private behavior that contradicts stated values.

Washington rewards failure. It's time to send career politicians home
My time in Congress made it crystal clear to me that the system is rigged Washington, D.C., is broken. I don't think that's a controversial statement anymore. Eighty-three percent of Americans support term limits on Congress — and even more Alaskans do — and approval of Congress sits at around 12%. People aren't wrong to feel that way. I say this as someone who's been there.

Opinion: Fighting for our fish and our fishermen
Alaska U.S. Senate candidate Mary Peltola, a Democrat, speaks during a campaign rally on May 14, 2026, in Juneau, Alaska. (AP Photo/Becky Bohrer, file) I grew up on the Kuskokwim River, where we have always depended on salmon. On the Kusko, a baby’s first solid food is dried salmon strips. From my childhood fishing with my father to spending long summer days at fish camp with my own kids, fishing is a way of life for me and for so many Alaskans.
Opinion: No one from the Lower 48 is coming to save us
The sun rises over the Kuskokwim River in Napakiak, Alaska. (AP Photo/Mark Thiessen, File) When your neighbor’s boat is swamping, you don’t call Washington, D.C., you grab a bucket. No one from the Lower 48 is coming to save us. We don’t expect them to. But right now, I’m feeling real fear from people who have never shied away from hard work or bad weather. Families are stretching paychecks so thin they can see through them. Young people who grew up here can’t afford to stay.
ICYMI: Biden Targets Alaska’s Petroleum Reserve
The Hill recently published an opinion piece from Alaska’s bipartisan congressional delegation, outlining how the Biden administration is targeting the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A) with sweeping restrictions that are designed to prevent future development. The delegation argues these restrictions are unfair, unlawful, and will hurt Alaska’s economy and West Coast energy security while doing nothing to address climate change.
OPINION: Thank you, Alaskans, for your kindness
Alaskans, I have so much to thank you for. The past month has been one of the most difficult in my life. Losing my husband, Buzzy, has changed me forever. Having lost my mother earlier this year, it was hard to imagine what my life would look like now without them. But in the darkest moments, you showed me such kindness and grace. Immediately after the news broke, you were calling my office to share your condolences and prayers.
Opinion: The time to act is now
Even as much of the West continues to deal with historic rains and snowfall, planning for this year’s fire season is well underway. Soon, the United States Forest Service will release guidance to its offices and firefighters regarding how best to approach the 2023 fire season. With over 3.2 million forested acres of Forest Service land burned since 2020, it is critical the Forest Service takes swift action to address current conditions and adjust firefighting tactics to match.
Opinion: President Biden should reapprove the Willow Project Original
Editor’s Note: Lisa Murkowski, a Republican, is the senior US senator from Alaska. She is a senior member of the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, having previously served as chair. Dan Sullivan, a Republican, is the junior US senator from Alaska. He sits on the Senate Armed Services and Environment and Public Works committees. Mary Peltola, a Democrat, is a US representative for Alaska and the first Alaska Native elected to Congress.
Kanye West Announces 2024 Presidential Bid
Rapper Kanye West has said he intends to run for US president in 2024, despite facing several scandals over his recent behaviour. The star, who has legally changed his name to Ye, posted a video of his campaign logo to social media, alongside the caption Ye 24. He also claimed to have asked Donald Trump to be his running mate. West previously ran for president in 2020, but that campaign flopped, attracting a meagre 70,000 votes.
We Won't Retreat, Congolese Rebels Say
The M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo have said they will not retreat from their positions after regional leaders set a 18:00 Friday local time deadline for them to cease fire and retreat or face a regional force. Their spokesman Canisius Munyarugerero has told the BBC Great Lakes that the group is ignoring Wednesday’s decisions in the Angolan capital, Luanda, because “we were not invited to that meeting” to discuss the DR Congo conflict.
Sarah Palin Defeated By Mary Peltola In Alaska Comeback Bid
Former US vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin is projected to have again lost her bid for a political comeback after this month’s midterm elections. The Republican suffered her second defeat in three months to Mary Peltola, a Democrat, in the race for a US House of Representatives seat in Alaska. Senator Lisa Murkowski is meanwhile projected to have beaten a fellow Republican challenger in her election. The results won’t affect which parties run Congress after the midterms.
Musk Floats 'General Amnesty' Of Suspended Twitter Accounts
New Twitter owner Elon Musk on Wednesday polled users on whether the site should offer a general amnesty to suspended accounts, using the same method he used to handle the case of Donald Trump The move comes as Musk has faced pushback that his criteria for content moderation is subject to his personal whim, with reinstatements decided for certain accounts and not others.
Alaska debate for Congressional seat: Sarah Palin, Mary Peltola, Nick Begich and Chris Bye meet
The candidates running for the at-large congressional seat in Alaska appeared to pledge bipartisanship in the only debate of the race, which will feature ranked-choice voting – although not all the candidates, especially former Gov. Sarah Palin, could resist getting some partisan shots in. While Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola is the incumbent, she won a special election to replace the late Don Young in August and was sworn in on Sept. 13.

From the Alaska Post — Gore Field, near Great Falls, Mont. served as the beginning of the World War II era Alaska-Siberia Lend-Lease Route. Airplanes were flown from factories across the United States to Gore Field, outfitted to withstand the long journey north, and then flown to Ladd Army Airfield in Alaska where they were signed over to Soviet pilots for the next leg of the aircraft’s long journey to the eastern front. Today marks the 75th anniversary of the first of those flights.
Races to watch throughout the West
The midterm elections promise to be a referendum on Joe Biden — and Donald Trump. From the print edition Like Tweet Print Subscribe Donate Now Midterm elections are always a bit strange. On the one hand, there’s no presidential contest to reverberate down the ticket to state and local races, so the latter are able to stand on their own. At the same time, voters tend to express their feelings about the current administration at the midterm ballot box, especially in congressional races.
As tribal leaders, we urge collective action for Western Alaska salmon now
By Mary Peltola, Brooke Woods and Melanie Bahnke Updated: 50 minutes ago Published: 50 minutes ago Unused salmon nets hang next to moose meat in the Stevens' smokehouse, which would normally be filled with salmon this time of year, on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2021, in Stevens Village, Alaska. For the first time in memory, both king and chum salmon have dwindled to almost nothing and the state has banned salmon fishing on the Yukon.
Fisheries managers should reverse course on censoring public comments
The North Pacific Fisheries Management Council process is difficult to navigate. It is a world of acronyms, statistics and legal jargon; but decisions made there impact the lives of all Alaskans, and directly affect allocations of federally-managed species — including king salmon and halibut — to Indigenous, sport and commercial stakeholders. Meetings occur over weeks and can last more than 10 hours per day. It requires significant time to participate, time the average Alaskan does not have.
