PhaseT3M: 3D imaging at 1.6 Å resolution via electron cryo-tomography with nonlinear phase retrieval - Nature Communications
Abstract Electron cryo-tomography (cryo-ET) enables 3D imaging of complex, radiation-sensitive structures with molecular detail. However, image contrast from the interference of scattered electrons is nonlinear with atomic density and multiple scattering further complicates interpretation. These effects degrade resolution, particularly in conventional reconstruction algorithms, which assume linearity.
Memsensing by surface ion migration within Debye length - Nature Materials
Abstract Integration between electronics and biology is often facilitated by iontronics, where ion migration in aqueous media governs sensing and memory. However, the Debye screening effect limits electric fields to the Debye length, the distance over which mobile ions screen electrostatic interactions, necessitating external voltages that constrain the operation speed and device design.
A Bitopic mTORC Inhibitor Reverses Neural Phenotypes in a Tuberous Sclerosis Complex Murine Model of SEGA-like Hamartomas
Abstract Neural stem cells (NSCs) of the ventricular-subventricular zone (V-SVZ) generate diverse cell types including striatal glia during the neonatal period. NSC progeny uncouple stem cell-related mRNA transcripts from being translated during differentiation. We previously demonstrated that Tsc2 inactivation, which occurs in the neurodevelopmental disorder Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), prevents this from happening.

The long non-coding RNA FAM30A regulates the Musashi2-RUNX1 axis and is required for LSC function in AML cells
Abstract High expression of the long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) FAM30A has been previously associated with leukemic stem cell (LSC) activity and poor prognosis in both adult and paediatric acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) patients, yet it has not been functionally studied. This study provides the first cellular characterization of FAM30A focussing on an internal tandemly organised region, referred to as FAM30A repeats.
Establishing coherent momentum-space electronic states in locally ordered materials - Nature Communications
Abstract Rich momentum-dependent electronic structure naturally arises in solids with long-range crystalline symmetry. Reliable and scalable quantum technologies rely on materials that are either not perfect crystals or non-crystalline, breaking translational symmetry. This poses the fundamental questions of whether coherent momentum-dependent electronic states can arise without long-range order, and how they can be characterized.
Imaging 3D chemistry at 1 nm resolution with fused multi-modal electron tomography - Nature Communications
Abstract Measuring the three-dimensional (3D) distribution of chemistry in nanoscale matter is a longstanding challenge for metrological science. The inelastic scattering events required for 3D chemical imaging are too rare, requiring high beam exposure that destroys the specimen before an experiment is completed. Even larger doses are required to achieve high resolution. Thus, chemical mapping in 3D has been unachievable except at lower resolution with the most radiation-hard materials.
Leukaemia exposure alters the transcriptional profile and function of BCR::ABL1 negative macrophages in the bone marrow niche - Nature Communications
Abstract Macrophages are fundamental cells of the innate immune system that support normal haematopoiesis and play roles in both anti-cancer immunity and tumour progression. Here we use a chimeric mouse model of chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) and human bone marrow (BM) derived macrophages to study the impact of the dysregulated BM microenvironment on bystander macrophages.
Effect of solid-electrolyte pellet density on failure of solid-state batteries - Nature Communications
Abstract Despite the potentially higher energy density and improved safety of solid-state batteries (SSBs) relative to Li-ion batteries, failure due to Li-filament penetration of the solid electrolyte and subsequent short circuit remains a critical issue. Herein, we show that Li-filament growth is suppressed in solid-electrolyte pellets with a relative density beyond ~95%.
Activating p53 abolishes self-renewal of quiescent leukaemic stem cells in residual CML disease - Nature Communications
Abstract Whilst it is recognised that targeting self-renewal is an effective way to functionally impair the quiescent leukaemic stem cells (LSC) that persist as residual disease in chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML), developing therapeutic strategies to achieve this have proved challenging. We demonstrate that the regulatory programmes of quiescent LSC in chronic phase CML are similar to that of embryonic stem cells, pointing to a role for wild type p53 in LSC self-renewal.
Quantitative Mid-infrared Photoluminescence Characterization of Black Phosphorus-Arsenic Alloys
Black phosphorus (bP) is a promising material for mid-infrared (mid-IR) optoelectronic applications, exhibiting high performance light emission and detection. Alloying bP with arsenic extends its operation toward longer wavelengths from 3.7 μm (bP) to 5 μm (bP3As7), which is of great practical interest. Quantitative optical characterizations are performed to establish black phosphorus–arsenic (bPAs) alloys optoelectronic quality.
Solving complex nanostructures with ptychographic atomic electron tomography - Nature Communications
Abstract Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is essential for determining atomic scale structures in structural biology and materials science. In structural biology, three-dimensional structures of proteins are routinely determined from thousands of identical particles using phase-contrast TEM. In materials science, three-dimensional atomic structures of complex nanomaterials have been determined using atomic electron tomography (AET).
Pyruvate anaplerosis is a targetable vulnerability in persistent leukaemic stem cells - Nature Communications
Abstract Deregulated oxidative metabolism is a hallmark of leukaemia. While tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) such as imatinib have increased survival of chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) patients, they fail to eradicate disease-initiating leukemic stem cells (LSCs). Whether TKI-treated CML LSCs remain metabolically deregulated is unknown.
Ordering of room-temperature magnetic skyrmions in a polar van der Waals magnet - Nature Communications
Abstract Control and understanding of ensembles of skyrmions is important for realization of future technologies. In particular, the order-disorder transition associated with the 2D lattice of magnetic skyrmions can have significant implications for transport and other dynamic functionalities. To date, skyrmion ensembles have been primarily studied in bulk crystals, or as isolated skyrmions in thin film devices.
Which primary Care Physicians Deliver Home Visits to Their Dying Patients in Ontario? A Retrospective Cohort Study

Observation of spin-momentum locked surface states in amorphous Bi2Se3 - Nature Materials
Abstract Crystalline symmetries have played a central role in the identification and understanding of quantum materials. Here we investigate whether an amorphous analogue of a well known three-dimensional strong topological insulator has topological properties in the solid state. We show that amorphous Bi2Se3 thin films host a number of two-dimensional surface conduction channels.
Observation of formation and local structures of metal-organic layers via complementary electron microscopy techniques - Nature Communications
Abstract Metal-organic layers (MOLs) are highly attractive for application in catalysis, separation, sensing and biomedicine, owing to their tunable framework structure. However, it is challenging to obtain comprehensive information about the formation and local structures of MOLs using standard electron microscopy methods due to serious damage under electron beam irradiation.

Delirium screening tools validated in the context of palliative care: A systematic review
What is already known about the topic? Delirium is a common neuropsychiatric disorder that can be highly distressing to patients and caregivers. The palliative care population has a higher risk of delirium, given rates of medical illness, frailty, and proximity to end of life. Timely identification of delirium is a priority; while multiple screening tools exist, they have been largely validated in patient populations other than palliative care. What this paper adds?

Do Patients Retain their Family Physicians after Long-Term Care Entry? A Retrospective Cohort Study
Abstract Objective Older adults value and benefit from the long-standing relationship they have with their family physicians. This dynamic has not been researched in a long-term care (LTC, ie, nursing home) setting. We sought to determine the proportion of LTC residents who retain their community family physician within the first 180 days of LTC, and the resident, physician, and LTC home factors that may influence retention. Design Population-based retrospective cohort study.

Rational decision making based on history - Journal of General Internal Medicine
Abstract Primary care physicians are often required to make preliminary evaluations based only on the patient’s history, especially during telephone encounters about sore throats. The authors studied adults with sore throats to determine whether patients can be stratified into higher and lower risks of strep throat by history alone. They first obtained data from 517 patients seen in an emergency room. Providers graded symptoms on a four-point scale (absent, mild, moderate, or severe).
