Antibodies, also referred to as immunoglobulins (Igs), are large proteins utilized by the immune system to identify and neutralize antigens. (1) Each Ig molecule is composed of a basic structure that includes two identical heavy polypeptide chains and two identical light chains, which are linked together by multiple disulfide bonds. (2) These molecules are categorized into five classes (IgA, IgD, IgE, IgM, and IgG), which are differentiated by their heavy polypeptide chain type.
