As a boy, Duane Michals loved counting stars in the fiery night sky above his family’s hilltop home in McKeesport. He fulfilled his boyhood dreams of adventure, forging a stellar international reputation by diving deeply into the storytelling power of photography. His memorable sequences of black-and-white images featured text or poetry on the white borders of his prints, allowing him to reflect on death, memory, the nature of time, spirituality and his childhood home.
