Highlights • Active as compared to sham rTMS reduced tinnitus, but not tDCS. • rTMS over the auditory cortex was the most beneficial protocol to reduce tinnitus. • rTMS over the auditory cortex generated a stronger electric field in the insula. • rTMS can reduce tinnitus up to 6 months after the end of the rTMS regimen. • Women are more likely than men to benefit from rTMS for tinnitus relief.
