Digital ID costs cited at £15m

The government spent around £15m on developing digital identity before the scheme was scrapped by the new prime minister Andy Burnham. Of that £15m, £800,000 was spent on delivering the People’s Panel, which randomly selected 100 people from across the country to contribute to the government’s consultation on the policy, while more than £1.6m was spent on media promotion to encourage citizens to take part in the consultation, PublicTechnology recently reported.

Spad numbers rocketed to all-time high under Starmer

The number of special advisers working in the UK government hit an all-time high in 2025-26, just-published Cabinet Office data has shown. According to the government’s Annual Report on Special Advisers 2026, there were 159 spads working across government as of 31 March this year – up from 130 the year before. The figure represents a 22% year-on-year hike and is the highest recorded number of spads. Spad numbers remained broadly flat between 2023-24 and 2024-25.

Bungled housing deal cost MoD £14.5bn, National Audit Office says

The Ministry of Defence’s decision to sell off 55,000 service-family homes and lease them back from a property firm cost the public purse £14.5bn over the course of three decades, a new report from the National Audit Office has found. The deal with Annington Property Ltd, struck in 1996 under the Conservative administration of John Major, was exited by the current government in 2024 with a buy-back of more than 36,000 homes at a cost of £5.99bn.
