Iowa: Using a Vertical Tillage Tool for Weed Management - Video
In addition to preparing the soil for planting, tillage can be an effective strategy for weed management. During a field trial, blue chalk was applied to the soil surface in areas where a tillage pass was made with a vertical tillage (VT) tool at a 3 degree, 5 degree and 9 degree gang angle setting. In this video, ISU Extension Field Agronomist Meaghan Anderson explains how a VT tool performs when it comes to mixing herbicides into the soil, and which gang angle settings are most effective.

In this video, Dr. Matt Darr reviews the results of four tillage options five days after tillage, and the benefits of each tool to help you choose which option is right for your operation this fall.
Iowa: Drones Help Scout Derecho Crop Damage
Monday’s derecho event took a toll on crops across Iowa. Satellite imagery shows millions of acres of Iowa crops impacted by the high wind events. As growers dig out from the destruction left after the storm, decisions regarding how to manage the impacted crop will be front and center. For wind damaged corn, the decision about how to manage the crop will largely depend on if the plants are bent over or snapped off. Plants that are bent can still transport water and nutrients.

There are many factors that go into this decision, including availability of equipment and labor and weather and field conditions that change year to year.
Yield Considerations for High Speed Planting
By Matt Darr Recently Iowa State University (ISU) completed a five-year study of high speed planting technology using the Precision Planting SpeedTube and the John Deere ExactEmerge seed meter and seed delivery system. Both planters provided excellent singulation and spacing of corn while planting up to 10 miles per hour (High Speed Planting Technology Article, Link 1). In agriculture, it is rare that a single technology will provide a guaranteed yield response every year.
