What China Can Learn from Washington's Caribbean Model
The successful capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on 3 January 2026 confirmed a change in the use of naval power in the Western Hemisphere. Over the past year, the Southern Command area of responsibility hosted a concentration of U.S. naval forces not seen since the 1989 overthrow of Panamanian president Manuel Noriega. SouthCom is traditionally the focus of Coast Guard drug interdiction efforts and Fourth Fleet goodwill visits.

Unlocking the sun's secret messengers: DUNE experiment set to reveal new details about solar neutrinos
Neutrinos—ghostly particles that rarely interact with normal matter—are the sun's secret messengers. These particles are born deep within the sun, a byproduct of the nuclear fusion process which powers all stars. Neutrinos escape the sun and stream through Earth in immense quantities. These particles are imprinted with information about the inner workings of the sun.

Ford Motor Co. will have to pay up to $165 million for failing to comply with federal recall requirements, the nation's governmental safety agency for cars and trucks announced Thursday. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said Ford failed to recall defective rearview cameras in a timely manner and also failed to provide accurate and complete recall information as required under federal law.
Bias by moderators in online chatrooms can be identified and fixed, new research finds Original
If you hoped to escape a deluge of partisan political promotion during the last days of this election season, your social media feeds probably won't provide much solace. A Wall Street Journal report last week found "new X users with interests in topics such as crafts, sports and cooking are being blanketed with political content and fed a steady diet of posts that lean toward Donald Trump and that sow doubt about the integrity of the Nov.

Wayne State University scores unusual $200K grant to improve mine worker safety Original
Detroit is much better known for Motown music than mountain mining. But that didn't stop the U.S. Department of Labor last week from granting more than $200,000 to a Wayne State University professor's effort to improve mine worker safety from the threat of potentially deadly dust exposure. The state of Michigan still has some large-scale mining industries such as metallic, copper and sand.
Profit on the ground: How Hurricane Helene is still robbing Georgia farmers
Walk a cotton field these days and it's easy to spot evidence of a looming financial calamity possibly awaiting Georgia's farmers. Puffs of the white material − soaked by rain and ripped prematurely from its branches by wind − now carpet the soil below. "That's profit on the ground right there," sighed one farmer on Sunday morning along Brown Road in Hephzibah. Georgia has become an agricultural state in crisis.

Have a tip to share about vehicle safety? Here's how to reach us Original
Detroit remains the epicenter of the global auto industry and many of us in the region have special insight into the safety of its cars and trucks. And that's where you come in. We'd like to hear from people who have experience with the nation's vehicle recall system and its consequences. That includes average car and truck owners who have had good and poor experiences with the system.
How to find out if your vehicle has a recall, what it means and what drivers need to know Original
It's OK, most of us have done it. We see headline after headline about yet another safety recall of thousands, if not millions, of cars or trucks – and never check to see whether our car or truck is among them. Or we get a snail-mail recall notice that some of us mistake for junk and quickly toss in the trash. Here's what to do instead to make sure that the Ford or Ferrari parked in your garage is up to snuff safety-wise. What is a safety defect?
Free Press investigation into recalled vehicles: What to know
Read full article The Detroit Free Press spent months looking into one of the more vexing problems in the auto industry: the failure to get recalled passenger cars and trucks in the U.S. off the road and fixed, especially older vehicles. Without any federal requirement on auto companies to fix all of the potentially dangerous used vehicles, the annual repair rate rarely exceeds 65% — and much less than that for older vehicles.

The auto industry has a recall problem: Here's why proposed solutions haven't passed yet Original
Many proposed solutions to fix the nation’s vehicle safety recall system have either been sidelined or short-circuited, largely at the behest of some of the biggest players in the auto industry. In a monthslong investigation, the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, found automakers overseen by federal regulators are making little progress in repairing their oldest passenger models that have potentially life-threatening defects, putting millions of drivers at grave risk. U.S. Sen.

Millions of older cars, trucks with dangerous defects aren't getting fixed Original
Consumers are notified about their faulty vehicles, but often there is no immediate part available to correct the problem. Sometimes, no one knows immediately how to fix them. Secretaries of state around the country register vehicles as road-worthy despite unfixed safety defects. Used car retailers continue to sell potentially faulty cars and trucks with open recalls while new car dealers legally can't. On a dark winter morning, Jeffrey Wu nearly lost his life stopping for gas.
Unemployment, prices in Detroit have been up: New forecast predicts what's next Original
In Detroit, unemployment is expected to tick up slightly before improving, while inflation is expected to drop off sharply over the next year, according to a city-university partnership economic forecast released today. The forecast comes on the heels of a more mixed prediction for the state as a whole, with two possible options.

Millions of cars on the road have an unfixed safety recall. Hear one man's tragic tale Original
The Free Press' investigation into the nation's vehicle recall system includes a lot of statistics to illustrate the challenge of getting unrepaired cars and trucks with safety defects fixed. Behind the numbers, there are many lives forever changed by unfixed cars and trucks under recall. In this extended special report from Free Press audio producer and host Robin Chan, we dive deep into the human side. We hear from Jeffrey Wu, a Chinese immigrant raising a family in suburban Minneapolis.
Millions of older cars, trucks with dangerous defects aren't getting fixed
On a dark winter morning, Jeffrey Wu nearly lost his life stopping for gas. Wu was driving his Jeep Grand Cherokee to work on March 4, 2022, when he pulled over to fill up about 20 miles south of Minneapolis. An investigation, He had a moment of forgetfulness as he tried to drive away from the Kwik Trip without removing the pump nozzle from his fuel tank. So the dairy plant worker said he stopped, and stepped out again into the frigid predawn.

Optomechanical dark matter instrument for direct detection
We propose the Optomechanical Dark-matter Instrument (ODIN), based on a new method for the direct detection of low-mass dark matter. We consider dark matter interacting with superfluid helium in an optomechanical cavity. Using an effective field theory, we calculate the rate at which dark matter scatters off phonons in a highly populated, driven acoustic mode of the cavity. This scattering process deposits a phonon into a second acoustic mode in its ground state.
Michigan college tuition sees across-the-board increases this fall Original
Learning the true cost of attending a Michigan university can be a difficult web to untangle. Higher education institutions post their sticker price for tuition, housing and fees. At public universities, the cost can vary wildly because in-state and out-of-state students fork over vastly different sums based on higher tuition rates for nonresidents. Thanks to financial aid, many families also never need to pay close to the list price.
What's new to see on Michigan campuses? Here are 5 projects at 5 universities. Original
Some national experts now say however, with softened growth in student enrollment and tighter budgets, large-scale new-build projects cropping up annually could be fewer and farther between. Renovation of existing facilities - and not new construction - may be the emerging trend. The modern Michigan college campus has often been awash in construction, aiming to shore up infrastructure, improve student life, upgrade athletic facilities and so much more.

New signal of atmospheric tau neutrino appearance: Sub-GeV neutral-current interactions in JUNO
We propose the first practical method to detect atmospheric tau neutrino appearance at sub-GeV energies, which would be an important test of νμ→ντ oscillations and of new-physics scenarios. In the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO; starts in 2024), active-flavor neutrinos eject neutrons from carbon via neutral-current quasielastic scattering.
Absorption of fermionic dark matter via the scalar portal
The absorption of fermionic dark matter has recently been studied as a signature for the direct detection of dark matter. We construct the first UV completion of the scalar effective operator associated with this signature. We calculate the constraints on the model and demonstrate there is viable parameter space which can be probed by a next-generation experiment such as XLZD.
Exploring light dark matter with the Migdal effect in hydrogen-doped liquid xenon
An ongoing challenge in dark matter direct detection is to improve the sensitivity to light dark matter in the MeV–GeV mass range. One proposal is to dope a liquid noble-element direct-detection experiment with a lighter element such as hydrogen. This has the advantage of enabling larger recoil energies compared to scattering on a heavy target, while leveraging existing detector technologies.

There may be reason why University of Michigan isn't disclosing details of internet attack
University of Michigan officials offered no motive for what one regent, who said he was briefed on this week’s internet outage, reportedly described as a "targeted attack" on three of its campuses online systems nor has a suspect been identified. But even if that is known, there may be good reason not to disclose it if anything like what happened in 2020 to the University of California, San Francisco is in play here.
